Sidewinder upper gear with oiling hole?

Hey Dan what didn't you like about the 22 tooth top gear did it loose low end or midrange power or was it just hard on belts with a tune
That really is the million dollar question.

Season 1.... I ran the 22 top gear with 270 tune most the time. I loved how the chain had no dogleg and tensioner had lots of threads left. But that is about it. It was very hard on belts. I was running stock offset(61mm) and dirty 8JP stock belts most the season, and even blew a Carlisle Xs825(Ultimax) early on with a poor clutching setup at the time(I believe).

Season 2....Now I have lowered offset to 1 to 1 using Dave's alignment bar. I have removed the float altogether. I have gone back to stock gearing. I am running a new Timken Xs825(Ultimax). I now feel like the sled is a complete animal down low/mid in direct comparison. I thought it was snappy before but it even feels better with stock gearing in tight trail system. So far only 400 miles(just under) so I dont want to jump on any bandwagon yet claiming anything about belt life. But it sure does feel stronger, with zero marks anywhere on clutch faces, and nearly ZERO belt dust when comparing to last seasons mess.

As pertaining to gearing....If you NEVER will reach speeds over 126GPS or so, I see no reason to need more gear. Obviously if you sit on a lake all day with a gun and never actually ride your sled, then you DO need to gear it for those big numbers on GPS or stalker. I can certainly see why many stock cats(geared) do well on belts, all else being equal. They are only geared for approx 118gps.

BTW my early 22 tooth had NO oil holes at all, and my stocker 21 (2018) has one oil hole, but its not even drilled. So far no issues with either but only 1800 miles or so on ODO total as of today, lots more this weekend.

Dan,

I have a 2018 LTX LE, 50th. My failed top gear had a hole drilled through the gear but not through the bushing. Hopefully the new 21 gear with three holes makes a difference.

Like I said earlier, my circ clip behind gear came out? This took gear out of drive. Dealer Mechanic had never seen that before. Gear bushing wear is very common unfortunately but usually only results with machine not being able to go into reverse from what I understand. Arctic Cat 1100's also do this.

You must make sure your not over tightening the tensioner. Finger tight then loosen 1 turn Looks just about right to me. Also the flat head cap screws that hold the roller on the tensioner back out, locktight or a spot of weld on the bolt heads recommended.

No, it causes the same scenario that you experienced. It will only stay in reverse and pop out of forward gear. My buddy stood on the a-arms and drove his Cat off the lake backwards!!!

I drilled 2 holes in my early 22 gear with a carbide masonry bit, checked it this fall for wear there was absolutely ZERO wear on the bushing after one poor season of riding of just 1700 miles. Looked just like the day I put it in using 75-90 gear oil in the case.

On the other hand, the bolts holding the tensioner roller on were none to tight! I removed both and used red loctite and my impact to bolt that back together.
Do you run synthetic gear oil? Since my dealer only stocks conventional oil and said thats what they use in the sidewinders

Semi-Synthetic in mine. As long as it’s gear oil you should be golden. I used to use ATF years ago but found way too much wear using it in a trail sled chaincase.

Motorcraft full synthetic 75w140. Just checked my gears at 3500 miles they look like new. No oil hole.

My Chaincase oil "secret"..lol

300ml AMsoil for chaincase+125ml LUCAS stabilizer. No bushing wear on my 22 whitout oiling hole(5 oookm:)

for "slick"gears and reverse...... polishing gears +molybdenum woooooooowwww;)!

I run Lucas in mine also with 75-90 full synthetic. I also overfill it by a bit, its a long way to that upper gear set.....

My 2019 LTX LE has worn out 2 upper bushings so far , the last had 3 drilled holes , only lasted 3880 km . What is the best fix , tired of this crap .
