The issue lies in the reverse setup. I put 2000 trouble free miles on my STM HYVO gears and chain. The cat setup is Mickey Mouse. Trying to hold a 180 HP sled in gear with a windshield wiper motor is a joke.
Plus I'm curios did Yamaha replace all the gears and chains with HYVO stuff or just the main drive stuff?

KaaaaBoooom! Tom, My chain case let go yesterday so I feel your pain. Update was done at 600mi by dealer. 1143mi and the Viper is done. Reverse works/worked. Forward and all I hear is crunch-crunch-crunch. First time being pulled back riding a broke Yamaha sense the 1990's. Verrrry disappointed. Missed a great day on the trail.

Sucks bad... mine had 2500 miles... did the same thing... I could smell oil and as I was slowing to stop it crunch, growl groan and mone and pow track locked. This is the first time I have never been stranded.

Yamaha should be ashamed for three reasons. First if they were going to use cats chassis they should have simply got the rights to copy it and it should have been built from the ground up in japan. Second they should have developed their own chain case with all the issues cat has had with this setup. Third and I think this is the biggest, I think it's terrible that the best riding/handling Yamaha to ever come out is a arctic cat. Because make no mistake as much as Yamaha wants to claim this is a Yamaha it's not. It's a cat with Yamaha emblums, Yamaha engine, and Yamaha clutches. That's where it ends.
Yamaha's may not have been the fastest or the best handling/riding but they were always the best built snowmobile with the best parts and the best fit and finish. This snomobile isn't a Yamaha sorry!!!

We get you don't like the Viper give it a rest. I for one would never buy another Yamaha TANK because they are unrideable in the mountains. I am now riding the two best sleds I have ever rode, a 2014 M8 and a 2014 Viper converted to an MTX.
You have selective memory, please see my post on selective memory but the high points are Yamaha had a TERRIBLE release of the 2007 Phazer with life threatening issues. As did the 2008 Nytro with the front ends. At least I do not have to fear for my life with the Viper.
Or maybe you should go buy a Poo or Doo and blow up an engine or two?

Here ya go jtssrx copy and pasted here for you. Tell me about Yamaha and there first year release quality again? And I am puzzled why you and your alter ego come here just to start a flame war, can you not add something of value?
Anybody remember any of Yamahas first year releases? As I had 3 Phazers I remember that one the best. Yamaha quality right?
This one could get you killed,

Yamaha is rcalling its 2007 model year PZ50 snowmobiles. Snow and ice stuck around the steering idler arm can cause a loss of steering ability, posing a risk of injury and death to drivers and passengers.
This recall involves all model year 2007 PZ50 snowmobiles, including PZ50W (Phazer), PZ50FXW (Phazer FX), PZ50GTW (Phazer GT), PZ50MW (Phazer Mountain Lite), and PZ50VTW (Venture Lite) model snowmobiles.
The snowmobiles were sold by Yamaha dealers nationwide from June 2006 through September 2007 for between $7,000 and $8,000. They were made in Japan.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled snowmobiles and contact an authorized Yamaha snowmobile dealer in their area to schedule a free repair. Registered owners were sent direct mail notification of this recall.
Consumer Contact: For additional information and to locate a Yamaha snowmobile dealer, contact Yamaha at (800) 962-7926, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.yamaha-motor.com.
The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
These were interesting, note the steering nut retorque.
Quote:
1. Is for the air intake silencer, it deverts snow away from the area TSB number is 090 UE.
2.Elevation Kit TSB number 93 ACM
3.Steering nut re-torque TSB number 9900 42Y.
4.Rear side panel build up of ice TSB number S08-030*
5.Hard starting in cold temperatures TSB S08-027*
And of course the loose motor mount, tunnel block off and add a fan updates.
Sooooo............was the ALL Yamaha phazer a better first year release than the Viper?

I like the viper and I like the pro cross. If it was built in a Yamaha Factory I would buy one. After going through what I did with my pro-cross I'll never own anything built in a cat factory or by a employee of Cat.
I've not once minimized anyone's experience on the Viper. I know from experience the pro-cross chassis is a riot to ride. I'm simply pointing out that this isn't a Yamaha.

Yes I believe so, it was a bearing failure. I would guess that's why she jumped out of gear on me. I even check it over but did not see the start of it... so those of you that have had them jump into neutral, I would tear it down and really take a good look at that upper jack-shaft bearing.
Also stingray719, to me your post even tho I know you are frustrated with some users... was way over the top and not necessary... all that does is stir the pot.

hmmmm replace a bearing and go to a C3 belt drive system? You would loose reverse but it looks like a solid system and saves 10-12 lbs.
Or delete reverse with a simple collar and bolt? same result -12 lbs. and no reverse.
Having your chain case let you down sucks! But as always Yamaha warrenty will come through and fix it back up looking better than new!
