Something let go in chaincase

I know bikeman (kerry shilts) ran initially anyways with all the reverse garbage taken out...I ran a aftermarket jackshaft and a set of hyvo gears....if yam is running hyvo gear and chain in there...Id strip out all the reverse.....you'll be left with the longer shaft and nothing on it...but thats fine...you can get a plug from the 800 cat that will fit the hole where the servo motor and gear were located...you'll loose about 8 lbs as I remember...

I will not strip and remove the reverse... thats a BS fix... I bought a sled with reverse to use it and I am getting to old to horse around a pile of iron. I am afraid some ones is going to get hurt on this reverse problem if it keep failing and jumping into neutral at high speeds.

Could the servo be bad allowing it to creep?

I was thinking this is the most likely cause of the over rev and pulsating issues being had on the viper. If this slippage crap is eliminated then the rest of the driveline can be addressed, regardless of gears, helix, spring or clutch weights. When is the last Yamha model with clutching issues, really. Lemon-law the chaincase. The root of the pooch has been found.

LOL, Well to be honest, I was actually loving the crap out of the Viper until this happened. I want everyone to love the sleds they ride, I just want a FIX that works and would try anything to make it right. Worse case I will rip that thing apart this summer and engineer my own fix... :o|

Number1keyster. We saw this sled yesterday I think in East Burke, Vt. Unbelievable tragic sight. Only thing left was the right ski and some nuts and bolts.

How and what do you need to do the reverse delete? I am putting this on asphalt and want to delete the reverse.

You can disable the reverse with a sleve I made some for my Cat to lock it permanently into forward.

Thanks TJ...

Exactly

Tom the servo motor was'nt the issue on the cat side...they changed to a rack and pinion to apply more force...not sure what you guys have comparatively but I say no its not the issue...like ive said...the reverse engagement gear was too tightly meshed (teeth too tight) some I know took it out and ground off every other tooth so it could find its way home easier ...thats the reverse...the falling out or jumping out of forward...its either the gear drive holding in gear (unless your servo motor failed? or they changed something?) you can remove the servo and cycle it to check ...just sharpie mark it and the gear first for timing ...for those who arent having issues...the gears timing is imperative..

Right on lol

When mine happened I dropped it off at the dealer at 2am, talk about fun wrestling that out of the trailer. Dealer said they took it apart and everything looked fine. No shavings and no gears were damaged. So I really don't have an answer except to say it's been fine for 1600 miles since then.

Maybe the chain case is getting to hot on those long runs. I had a skidoo once with reverse that would pop out of gear on long runs and it was getting very hot.

Nope the servo motor fails and when that happens it pops out of gear. My cat did it in the first 150 miles. The entire design is a complete joke. Yamaha has a proven system on the apex with a lever. They need to go back to a mechanical setup.

I'm shocked after all the issues Yamaha had with the phazer with the electric reverse that they would go with an electric setup on this sled.

I am looking for the opportunity to take a servo apart. If it is a simple worm gear drive it should never just pop out of gear unless a errant signal tells it to. Till I see one apart is no way of knowing if they have a spring or something else in there to give the worm gear setup some "give". If it turns out that it is a normal worm gear setup then its up to Yamaha to find the glitch since it would be electrical and or programing. From most reports even when the gear comes out and grinds it hasnt done any damage to the splines in the Yamahas gears unlike the previous Cats so at least thats a plus. Hopefully Yamaha will answer some of these issues in a bulletin soon.
