Yes, a lot of brands ran a bearing down there. In the 60's and 70's a lot of the sleds had a primary clutch idler bearing the belt ran on at idle. I always wondered why they went away from the idler bearing.
Here's an example on the 1972 Moto Ski clutch.

Red makes it look faster., you’ll believe it.

Although I prefer the Yamaha blue, I also really like the 2022 SRX and I bet it will stand out on the trail.
If I didn't have a SW and was buying new this year I would definitely consider the TCat for the EPS and strip off all its decals and green colors.
But realistically, if a person could wait a year, the EPS it probably going to be available on the SRX next year.

@ROCKERDANST boys wont run them on glare ice. I know it would be fun to see that but a few things you gotta think of.
Their MACH has the IR track, no "real" studs. The Winder would likely have no studs. ST does not stud the sleds they get to test/demo. They just review new sleds as they come. I'm pretty sure Yam and Cat do not offer a IR track, so that is likely why they did not run them off.
AJ did reply about his thoughts, and he agrees 998 will be faster. I think just about every "Mach buyer" with any sort of big sled knowledge agrees the 998 will be faster. I know I have always thought the 998 will be faster.
The question being asked and talked about though is which sled will be "quicker". With this question, the answer is not as easy to guess on outcome IMO. I believe from my experience owning a stock 998 and logging a fair amount of miles on a stock 900t(last yr) with 150HP, the snap down low is much better corner to corner on the 900t. With the new 900r at 180 claimed, that should be even better.
You can go back and find many of my old posts where i talk about stock Winder, and how docile it makes power. NO SNAP corner to corner, I must have typed that a thousand times back in 2018..LOL. Simple cure was a Quick spool tune, once tuned I absolutely loved my SNAPPY Winder, it was an animal.
I need to be more detailed here. Typically I along with most, lump the Cat 998 in with the YAM 998. So let me separate them. You will find some old posts, where my bud came to ride with me for a weekend. He had a new RR cat 998. BONE STOCK. I had my 270 tune with snappy corner to corner. Well, low and behold....We swapped as he wanted to try my Winder with tune, and did I ever get a surprise. That Cat with its "zero deflection" clutch setup and 24/50 gearing was just about as snappy corner to corner as my TUNED Winder! That has always stuck in my head.
So while I stick to my statement that a stock 998 has no snap corner to corner, i must be sure to clarify it was a YAM 998. The Cat is completely different down low corner to corner.
With that being said....Here are my future results from next December shoot out. I believe the Mach will take the win in seconds(Time) but the Tcat will take the win in MPH(Speed). I wish they will have a Winder there too, but likely wont. I also hope they will run the Mach with/ then without Launch control, just to compare.
Should be a fun winter. I just wish BRP could have added EPS somehow to the Mach. I think that new Tcat with EPS around my tight trail system would be a game changer.
Dan
Dan, good summary.
I think that until Doo has individual throttle bodies similar to the 998 setup, it will never have the instant throttle response the 998 has.

If price wasn't a factor , do you think the 22 SRX could be retro fitted with the Yamaha EPS ?Although I prefer the Yamaha blue, I also really like the 2022 SRX and I bet it will stand out on the trail.

But realistically, if a person could wait a year, the EPS it probably going to be available on the SRX next year.
Would the existing ECU be able to run it ? Assuming it runs it .

The EPS is what made me go with the GT. I like the SRX colors but EPS was my main reason to trade. All things being equal, I would have bought the SRX if EPS was available. I would have to change the track but I have done that on every sled I have owned for the past 15 years....

If I get the 22 SRX , because I don't do blue, I will change the track to a 1.5 Ripsaw , for sure .The EPS is what made me go with the GT. I like the SRX colors but EPS was my main reason to trade. All things being equal, I would have bought the SRX if EPS was available. I would have to change the track but I have done that on every sled I have owned for the past 15 years....
And maybe add the BOP mechanical power steering , with the straight stock arms , just for fun , even though I don't think the sled is hard to steer, even coming off an EPS Apex.
I need to make a decision this month , as I completely expect to win the Draw in Canada to win the sled for free !!!

Hey guys,
I think it’s great Doo came out with this Mach Z. As others have said, competition is what drives innovation...period!
I Went to an 850 Doo XRS for ‘21, and the sled was Rock solid. Ran like a champ without so much as a hiccup. Build quality is off The charts in every way. Doo builds a very high quality product whether you like em or not. What an Incredibly fun sled.
I liked my sidewinder a lot too...but I don’t miss it much. My 21 850 filled it’s shoes better than I imagined it would. There’s a lot to be said for not having to re-engineer a lot of the sled/chassis parts. Cat needs to up the quality game of the chassis to the level of YAMAHA’s motor...if they can do that, it would be a huge step forward for them.
Maybe it’ll grow on me...but I’m not overly excited about the look of the new Mach Z as of now. Imo, Doo should have really upped the ante, and had a whole new redesigned motor, that put out 225 HP in stock form, and built everything else(chassis and drivetrain) around that, to handle that type of Power for the reliability purposes.
If the 180 HP number is true(and not 15-20 more), it’s basically only 10-15 HP more than the 850 is now, and 60 pounds heavier than the 850 two stroke. My 850 hauls #*$&@....and handles like a dream. I wouldn’t want to pay $3500 dollars more for only 10-12 HP, and significantly more weight. But that’s just me.
Now if it was 50-60 more HP than I have now, from the factory(stock), that would be a whole different ball game for me. That would peak my interest.
But nonetheless, the competition is great...so let’s keep it all coming. Miss all you guys.
Take Care all.
Winterwolf.

Oh look we have another Ski Doo guy back on TY, man the old Doo Talk must be going to he!! in a hand basket. You don't have to justify your 850 purchase to me but you are right about the Mach Z being only 20 more ponies than an 850 and 60 pounds heavier. You might think your 850 hauls a$$ but I had no problem this winter putting a few of them in there place with a stock Winder. It's all good you got your opinion and I have mine but all I'm saying is BRP better hope that the Mach Z runs better than there flag ship 850'S or there in trouble.

lol..it’s not 20 ponies more, only 10 to maybe 15 at most. And I’m not justifying anything. I like it fine on DooTalk, and I like it here too. No issues.
And nobody saying that a Winder can’t beat an 850 in a race. I’ve had both now, and I would never say otherwise. I liked mine a lot. But the 850 runs plenty strong, and overall is an awesome all around machine. Does many things well. it exudes very high quality.
So stop being a clown with the tude, and Don’t ruin this place. Nobody saying anything about whatever you or I like. To each their own. It’s all good.

No motor problems with the 850?, I like to keep my sleds for at least five years, any high mileage ones?

I like Yamaha's not Ski Doo's maybe that's the problem. Last time I looked the title of the site is Totally Yamaha I guess you think it's ok to come on here and talk up your Ski Doo but I guess that's my problem. Seems to be the thing to do lately.lol..it’s not 20 ponies more, only 10 to maybe 15 at most. And I’m not justifying anything. I like it fine on DooTalk, and I like it here too. No issues.

Lots of high mileage 850’s out there for sure. Mine was new this season, so I only have a 1000 miles. But my buddy has an 18 with 6000 miles and hasn’t touched anything...he may change the plugs for next season. Another friend has a ‘17 with over 15,000 miles and no issues.
Ive owned two Yammy’s.....an 07 Apex and my ‘18 Winder, and liked them both very much. My Apex was super rock solid. This is my second Doo, and so far it’s been Great! Can’t say a bad thing about it.
And contrary to what TPAY says, certainly not talking up my Doo at all. Just stating a fact...it’s been a great sled this first year.
I like both Yamaha and Doo...have had good fortune with both. My Winder had a few reliability issues, but it didn’t stop me from liking the good points(power and motor) of the sled at all. And I know there are some with no issues at all...I wish I had been one of them.
I don’t get the hostility or attitude by some toward somebody who had YAMAHA’s, and now has another brand? I would never bad mouth my Yamahas ...or anybody who had one, cuz I enjoyed both of mine.

Thanks Cannondale. I always liked it here. Never had an issue in 4 years. And I’m certainly not here to tout another brand that I currently own. Just thought I’d check in cuz I saw the Mach Z thread. Certainly wasn’t meaning anything like what one poster is implying. I’m not one of those guys at all.
