Supercharger/Turbocharger One Big Question

I have an 04 Rx1 MTN with about 60lbs off and a 16x162x2.3track.I am planning on forcibly inducting it.I have a friend that has a 03 with the MPI Supercharger set up for 230hp,I have ridden it and It rocks,Nice installation,and throttle response is awesome,I live in B.C. and love boondocking so good response is a must.BUT less than 2 hours from me is Powder Lites,And Alpine Yamaha,They are producing an awesome front mount turbo kit,I rode Daves TVector and it was surprising.The RX1 kit is 240 hp on PUMP Premium.I like the supercharger for the easy install,no loss of fuel capacity,and less under hood heat,but I can not get used to the fact of having to use 50/50 Race fuel,which is approx.$4.50 per litre.can the head be shimmed to use Pump Premium,and maintain the power? I am not ging to spend this much dough for 180 hp.Any body know?? If not I guess its Turbo here I go. Thanks

You could certainly stack stock head gaskets or run a thicker cometic gasket and run 10 lbs of boost on the supercharger on premiumm pump fuel. You will loose some HP when stacking head gaskets or going to a thicker gasket though, but you should stay above 215-220hp reliably on pump gas. How many will it take? I can't answer that question for you, but maybe SUPERABE or Mac @ MPI can be of more assistance to you. This is what I plan to do with my supercharged RX-1 this winter though, that's if I don't jump to a 300+ hp supercharger option first!

I too have this same question. I have an 06 Apex MT coming and I like the clean easy install, no heat problems , no mods to factory hood , gas tank , exhaust , header cracking someday , what ever powderlites is doing to the engine to run 91 pump gas at 240 hp should also work on a stage 2 supercharger 91 pump gas at 240 hp. If not it's powderLites for me to. I also can't justify spending xxxx amount for 180 hp , but 240 hp on 91 pump gas you bet !

Sometimes I find people, funny myself included, we spend literally thousands of dollars on mods some guys can easily add $7-8000.00 to the price of a sled yet when it comes to putting in fuel we get all bent outta shape and shop all over the place to save $1.00 on a fill up. Buy a barrel of race fuel and be done with it if you want the blower. In the end it won't make any difference because you'll have still spent a fortune. In ten years from now todays race fuel is going to look like a bargain.

Anybody know if there is an octane boost that would provide the needed octane? Would really like to know if anyone has had experience stacking head gaskets with the super.I dont want to be a guiney pig.

Yes what's up with octane boost? Anybody use it? I was told to stay away from it. I bought some TT114 last year and carried it along to add to my fill ups to boost my octane ratings and was told that it was much better than Octane boost.


Wouldn't it be nice if somebody made a inexpensive compact fuel tester?

All octane booster is misleading. When they say it raises your octane 5 points, that doesn't mean it moves it from 91 to 96, it means it moves it from 91 to 91.5 octane. The easiest way to boost your octane right now is with race fuel.

I guess that's the diff between flatlanding and mountain riding. 70 miles is a long day in the mountains you're pretty well beat at the end of it.

It is a super concentrated race fuel made by Torco Race Fuels that can be added to pump gas to get the desired octane you want (up to 106 octane race gas). It comes in 5 gal pales and 32 oz bottles. Should be able to add it to your tank at gas stations.

Yes , Monker thats right, but it's that time you mabe get caught on the mt. with a low tank , it just extends the window of insurance for your engine to accept lower octane gas. Thanks BlgsRX-mtn thats worth looking into.

As Allen said, points on octane boost are decimal. There is the option of the torco additive or toluene. There are quite a few pages on toluene on the internet if you search for it.

Personally, I'm not going crazy with the boost (yet). 200 reliable hp is plenty for me on the trail and no worries at the pump. If I go racing or to the track, it's easy enough to change pullys and go to race fuel to up the hp. If you going to spend 5k on a SC or turbo, why cheap out on gas. Gotta protect your investment. Go into the engine or add gaskets if you want to run more boost. The additaves may or may not work, but that's why you have the gauges to tell you what's going on.
