Team Primary on Winder secondary mocked up

Has anybody shimmed a team primary? Should be same as my cat 1100 clutch, I had to shim for take off.

Yes, Had it out yesterday on the lake. We all know lake running is not the same as a trail.

On 290 tune, pulling 84.4 G Dalton QA-2 76G weights fully loaded with 1/2" in tip and 1.5" behind that in arms in with Dalton White Bronze in primary. Secondary setup I tried a few combos. Best I found with my 22/41 gearing was White Dalton Cat torsion at 0-1 with 39/35. For trail I think I'd still use a 35 however, it was slightly slower using the 35 but responds better and would be better in snow or trail conditions. Cat 104 belt ran 9000 RPM and slipped to badly up top. Dayco XTX seemed to work well however up top.

Nice quiet clutch setup. That said, Its off today and I'm going back to the rattling bucket of crap Winder clutch and the 8DN. I just don't like the Higher engagement of the Team and I'm not quite sure the performance is where I'd like it to be. Got a trip coming up and going back to what I feel is a faster setup on the Yamaha primary and the 8DN that I feel more comfortable with. I feel I was overgeared with the 22/41 for the Team as well. It liked to slip down low and you could smell belt as it was engaging and moving around from takeoff. Same with my buddies Cat 9000 who was geared at 24/50. Now I see why Cat gears them so low like that.
I was at my local Yamaha dealer last week. One of the mechanics there I have known for many years. A few years ago he went to a Cat dealership before coming back to the Yamaha dealership. We discussed clutch issues and I asked him his thoughts on the Team clutch. He said it is a good clutch, but it's weakness is that it doesn't grip the belt good enough at lower speeds. I remember someone recently posted a picture here showing the bottom portion of sheaves badly burnt/worn. That may be an extreme case, however, is somewhat a common occurrence. He thought maybe it was due to the profile of the weights, without the engagement 'hump' like Yamaha weights have and also Daltons. I tend to agree.

I have daltons I have this problem, I’m looking into shimming.

Shimming would be good but know that if you shim the Team primary you will also need to machine the spider nut. The cover hits the nut stock for control of full shift, which I don't necessarily care for, and not the sheaves themselves. IMO shimming will not help enough with this low end slippage either. The large bearing post is starting it out in a higher gear also and the reason I'd want to gear down some more for it.

I understand the TAPP to have the most incredible belt squeeze of them all.....Not that I want to drop big bucks on a new clutch but I do wonder how it would perform. So its not just a long lasting route, it may also be a much better performer and belt life extender.

So far so good with the YAM primary/Ultimax/Less offset ......

You seem pretty interested in that Tapp! I think you should buy it and ask for forgiveness later! ;)

Just bought and ran a TAPP on my Cat this last weekend, put on 300 miles in the UP (with STM secondary BTW). It's the most incredible clutch ever! I love the Ski-Doo design, it's buttery smooth, almost electric motor like feel. IMHO for anyone who turns it up, this should be required.

Hey I see you have a boat bilge blower on your sled, how does it work?

I went with 4 in bottom side belly pan on the 1100, blew at bottom of secondary.

TAPP is certainly an incredible primary. Been researching it for a few yrs now and 1200 guys love them. Definitely the cadillac of primaries for the 998. Nice to see more guys with 998s are going this route.

Dave told me he sends them out to run with the 8DN in stock YAM secondary. Clickers like the TRAs have are a bonus for us turbo guys.

You guys are really cranking up the torsion on those Cat springs. I run Cat green at 0-1, same as I did on my turbo Viper with the purple EPI spring.

9-1 is actually 20 degrees lower than 1-0 because the tangs are different.
