My opinion is the clutches are typical yamaha quality and design. They are very durable and efficient. I believe the problem is due to a few factors:
1. Improper secondary clutch alignment. This is the major issue and the root of most belt issues.
2. Improper belt preparation. I wash my new belts in the dishwasher to remove the oils from the manufacturing process.
3. Improper belt break-in. I drive easy and vary my rpm's for about 15 to 25 miles before wide open blasts.
I don' disagree with anything you state here, but I'll play Devils Advocate. As far as item #1, my winder has been to dealer several times and I'm told alignment is spot on. Items #2 and #3 ...here are my thoughts:
Let's say I put a brand new belt on my apex and I don't wash it or break it in. I wait for a 45 degree day, put the sled in 2ft of powder and hold it wfo for 500 miles. What will happen to the belt after all this abuse???? Absolutely nothing!
My winder can't make it 400 miles trail riding without blowing a belt. I know........the winder makes more power.
But here is where I get confused, years ago, i owned an 05 turbo RX-1 which ran 14lbs of boost and made 255hp. I wore a younger man's clothes back then and my balls were twice as big. I gave that turbo a hot supper everytime I threw a leg over it. Guess how many blown belts??......Zero
To me, something aint right with those winder clutches. Just my 5 cents......
