I may have discovered an oversight when installing the new secondary. When cutting the spacer to .770" shouldn't we add .06" for a spacer size of .830? The reason why I suggest that is the secondary is suppose to have an outer freeplay of 1-2mm. When using the .770" spacer that's the exact size for zero freeplay.

I cut a new space from what I had left from the .770 cut. Cut to .830 gave me 1.5 of end freeplay. I think this freeplay is important because with zero freeplay you could be pushing into the jackshaft bearing placing it under preload condition causing a failure. The 1-2 mm is probably there to allow the secondary to expand when it heats up.

I have the perfect amount of freeplay and offset with the spacer cut down to .770.
How would cutting it down to a longer dimensions give you more freepkay? A longer spacer would take up more room and provide less freeplay.

Its opposite what you are thinking Yamahas. Not real critical. About a 1/16in is right.

For those like me shopping for a used secondary, I came across this to verify what I am buying.
I found some good deals on newer secondary clutches, but by time I replace the helix (if too steep) and spring, machining splines, etc... damn not saving anything $$ wise. If you're lucky find one that will work as is.

I found this exact same clutch, 96 Vmax600. Shipped to my door for $85! FINALLY! I have been sifting eBay and Kijiji for months!

Should be a good staring point, my RPMs are up about 300rpm from my stock secondary without touching it. I just ordered up a red spring (1 step softer) to see if I can get back to down to 11,200-11,300 again without slipping the belt. If not I only can add another 1.8g to my primary weights as they already have 3.6g inside and 4.5g outside rivets.

I think RuggyBuggy might have a secondary from Porkchops sled.MikeWalters said:blueironranger said:YVX secondary 41*helix, green spring, 3-3 (60*)wrap

That's right. The longer the spacer the farther away from the frame. Lol had to think about it for a second.

Exactly, but with the .770 spacer I had zero. Cut to .830 and it's perfect.

Nope, running the new secondary.
edit: I misunderstood, Porkchop was running a stock secondary.

I went with the green secondary spring and my rpms dropped down to 11,080. Is was running at 11,450 with a pink spring but would see 11,600 on occasion. Top speed stayed the same at 86 indicated. Happy with the outcome.
One question though, how do you know if the spring your running is to light and causing clutch slippage. I ran the sled for about 15 miles and removed the cover to see how warm the clutches were. I could put my hand on them but only for about 5 seconds before my fingers got uncomfortable. Warm but not hot. Is this normal?

My secondary (the trashed one) gets blazing hot (not good)
How does the bimetal bushing look in your newer secondary? Shoe ramps look OK? Helix polished up nice and shiny?
Maybe put your old secondary on and see how hot it gets?
I added a Frogzskin to vent the clutch cover, it certainly does help let some hot air out, when its colder than -10 or 15 you can see a bit of steam coming out of it.

My secondary looks is in very good shape. It came off a Vector that had low miles. I read somewhere that someone doing some clutch work said there secondary was cold to the touch after making testing runs. Mines uncomfortable warm so wondering if the green secondary spring is not strong enough.

Mine gets warm playing in powder but not hot. Warm is what I consider 5 seconds or so before you have to pull your hand off, Hot would be too hot to touch or you can FEEL the heat before you touch it. Right now I have mine spot on with the Stock MTX 8DN-10 weights with 4.5g rivets in both holes, a stock green/yellow/green primary spring, and a Green secondary spring at 50* wrap on a 41* helix. These 8dn-10 weights were popular in the the 2 stroke days as an aggressive trail weight.
