Turbo intake idea

For my MPI turbo, I've been thinking about a different intake to get a colder charge that doesn't involve sticking the filter outside of the hood. So here's my crazy idea.

I've found out that the older Arctic Cat 1100 turbo, the stock intake routes up underneath the dash. And our friends at Evo Powersports have a kit where it's purpose is to eliminate the stock Cat air filter. Pics below are from Evo's website. It looks to me that we could maybe use this setup and route it to our MPI intake tube.

Thoughts?

looks interesting. where will the pre filter be located? or just run without one...
I've tried various locations and configurations in an attempt to lower intake temps other then straight up and out like the mountain set up. my own un scientific opinion is to the side above the clutches as close to the side panel as possible. I used the intake grate on the side panel from the ZR, cut the hole and covered it with frogskin. I positioned the air cleaner as close to that opening as possible
 
I'm not sure about air filtration yet. I'm going to have a close look at this at hay days. I think the 1100 turbo cat has frogskin filters built in the dash pod that the intake routes to.

I hope your onto something, i also noticed those 2 holes under the plastic panel's, wasn't sure if it was for extra cooling or ?

It does also have a filter in between. Real pain getting hood on and off because of that filer.

As if the hood is currently easy to take off? LOL
 
Th sleeper look is always awesome, but i will be routing mine through the side panel, sometimes you need stop caring what anyone else thinks and do whats best for performance

That is so true. I put my "Go Faster Module" through the hood and my air intake temps went from -8C to whatever temp is outside. My sled was its fastest at -35C before mod. Windshield also forces some air by the intake as an added bonus.

You are correct , my cousins 14 crosstour is quite noisy, not to mention sounds like a tractor idling.
 
So, I checked out what I could at Hay Days. I didn't find out as much as I had like to. For sure the instrument pod that has the frogskin prefilter will fit, with the additional gauge mount bracket. But, Evo didn't have an 1100T silicon charge tube for me to look at.

I messed around with my hood on Sunday, and I think it's going to be a really tight fit for the silicon tube to clear the MPI intake. There just isn't much room in there. But I still think it's worth trying. So I'm gonna get a silicon tube from Evo first to try 'proof of concept' and that will "keep'r mooovin" for now. If that passes, I'll source the rest of the parts I'll need to make things work.

To the other comments made thus far ... I really do appreciate them as I was asking for feedback on the idea. I'm not really looking for a 'sleeper' look with this mod, as I am just really not that pleased with the filter location on the turbo under the hood. And I simply don't like the look of the filter outside the hood ... that's nothing more than a personal preference. The note about the intake noise though is concerning. I hadn't thought of that at all, and it could end up being a big deal. So, I'll keep that in mind going forward.

As I progress, I'll take lots of pics. If it indeed does work I'll do my best to put together a full list of parts needed so anyone can do this mod. Stay tuned ........ :)
 
Just a quick update.... I received the cold air intake piece from Evo Powersports. Very nice piece and well made. The pics below will illustrate my idea in using this part made for the 1100T. Unfortunately, this isn't going to work. There is just too much interference. The silicon tube contacts the corner of the MPI aluminum intake. And it also comes in contact with the frame tube. The frame tube on the SR Viper is a bit different than the Cat 1100T to account for the larger 3 cylinder engine.

So, scrap that idea ... But I'm not done yet! The mock up using this intake still shows promise in the idea - enough promise that I AM going to make this work. Now on to plan B, which I think will actually work better anyway. New parts are on order. Stay tuned ....
