turbo intake ideas.

i have an idea for my intake and looking for input. hurricane 190 turbo with intercooler. the intake currently is next to the exhaust which obviously makes for higher intake temps. i want to keep the intake under the hood for cosmetic reasons. the idea is to make an air box under the intercooler with intercooler being the top. basically make 4 sides and a bottom. nothing air tight, but so most of the air would be sucked through the intercooler from the engine compartment and cool the charged air. the only "ram air" through the hood is into the radiator, so this idea should pass more air through the intercooler making it more efficient and taking cooler air into the intake, verses being next to the exhaust. should work?

the under hood heat is everywhere. even if it didn't cool the intake to the turbo, it should greatly increase the cooling of the intercooler. thus decreasing intake temps. just a thought. but i know what you mean.
 
I'm in the same boat. I really want to keep my intake under the hood but want to get some fresh air in there. My MPI intake sits right above the clutch guard, I'm thinking the frog skin setup cannondale put near where your knees would be and a bigger vent up front near the a arms would get more air flowing through there. Or maybe just the rear frogskin and box off the filter to it so its drawing outside air. Probably won't do anything till the offseason as I have more going on right now than I can handle but kicking around some ideas.
 
What about pluming it to the nose of of the sled right behind the front frogskin vent? i remember seeing ulmer made something like that for the mpi kit i don't see why you couldn't make one for the hurricane kit. then you would have cold air flowing in wile riding. thats from mr sleds turbo build

I also have hurricane turbo and am looking to do the same,get it away from exhaust can. Not alot of room coming off of turbo but I just ordered 45 degree coupler to come off of the turbo intake
and will try to make something similar to the pic above
 
i think if there was a problem with hp numbers in location that it is in now i would think dave would have addressed the problem, maybe i am wrong but a person should ask him if its worth it

Cold air = more power no question about it. I was next to one and the sensor said 62 degrees on his and 29 degrees on my EVO at the same place same time. Our MPI with under hood intake said 63 degrees in that same test same place same time. Now I didn't say there is a problem, I just pointed out cold air is free horsepower.
 
It definitely should be. But the difference in power may not be worth the trouble. NA I could not tell the difference under similar temp difference but the turbo guys all really do seem to notice when they put it outside hood.
 
I have the hurricane cold air intake on my 190 kit. IMHO I liked the out the hood look better but it's just my preference.

Same spot same time myn was 55-60 degrees and my dads mpi 180 with the under hood was 85-95. It's hard to tell a difference in power because his is a uncoupled 141 and I'm a 137 coupled, I think his hooks better on hardback but IMHO myn felt to be more responsive and had a harder pull

i just want to keep my turbo a "secret" my original idea was more to draw air through the intercooler making it more efficient, than to draw colder outside air. the problem with it in the nose is now you are drawing in air that passed through the radiator (190 deg). if i drew the same temp air through the intercooler my temp to the turbo would be the same but the intercooler would cool the air more thus making cooler air into the motor. just trying to think outside the box. either it will work good or be a flop.
 
Stop fighting it just put the air cleaner outside that's where it really needs to go anyways. Haha. I have noticed on really cold days the sled has a little bit more pep And I'm pretty sure with under the hood intake you would not notice that difference. Like stingray says cold air equals free horsepower so If you can find a way to get 100% cold outside air into your intake that's hidden under the hood some how that will be the ticket for sure! Not a lot of room to work with.

You could go alongside the radiator like Excell has it. Plenty of unheated air there. Mine is normally 25-35Deg intake temps at 20deg outside temp.

For that much difference, 34 degrees, it doesn't seem to be worth the hassle.
 
it makes a difference especially on turbos. maybe 5-8 hp "guess". which would be like buying a $700 header for a N/A sled. so if i can make intake temps 30 degrees cooler for 20 bucks of pvc fittings it is worth it. even with the intake next to the exhaust i can really notice a difference when riding in 30 deg weather to 0 deg weather. huge difference noticed with the pants dyno.
