2008 Minnesota TY ride###CANCELLED AGAIN###

I am going to try to make it there, have to do some checking. Did you post this on the 2-stroke side yet?

;)!

I'd love to attend, but I'll see what time of year we are going to our local group trip.
Dumb question: I have heard that Minn. does not allow studded tracks on many trails. Is there any truth to this? Haven't ever ridden there...

I believe they allow it still but having studs gets you an extra fee, I think. That law was change a couple times.

So how often would a person with studs have to find an alternate trail? Does it really pose that much of a problem for those of us with studs?

A lot of paved trails have unpaved trails right next to them that ALL snowmobiles are supposed to ride anyhow (that doesn't happen). The one exception that I know of is the Paul Bunyan between Brainerd and Hackensack. North of Hackensack there is the alternate trail. Most of the trails in the Park Rapids area are not paved anyhow, except the Heartland, which does have the alternate trail next to it.

I had studs on my old SRX and didn't run into any problems...just took ditches for a few miles if I needed to. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You aren't the only one riding in Minnesota that has studs :)

They got rid of the stud sticker. What a joke that was. Now they just require EVERYONE to buy a trail pass in addition to the registration. Always looking for a way to get us!

I can't recall ever running into a trail up here that created an issue for someone with studs. In the few places I have seen restrictions there has always been an alternate trail right next to it. Maybe over towards Duluth there is more of that but not by us. Just to ease your mind I will not be choosing any routes that have any stud restrictions and plan to go out of my way to keep you guys off any nasty in town road trails I hate grinding carbides on pavement, the fewer road crossings the better.

Nate and other NON members of the "United Socialist Republic of MN "I ride MN all the time and have never had a problem and all my sleds are studded.

Basically there is just a few area's were they paved a snowmobile trail, called it a bike trail then don't let us ride on it with studs. :o|

So generally the local clubs just made either a paralell trail or a by pass. But as Convert says not an issue in the area of this ride.

Hope this helps

And who dumps more money into the local economies, snowmobilers or bicyclists? I do both and can vouch for the obvious answer. Just doesn't seem right that the snowmobilers pay to pave the trails but are restricted when it comes to using them.

Wish I could make it, but it is the same time as I am riding Northern Ontario for a week. Maybe next year.

That definately eases my mind. I don't need any tickets!

I know of three trails in MN that are affect by studs, they are all paved for the OFF ROAD mountain bikers.

1. Munger in Duluth

2. Paul Bunyan?? by Brainerd

3. Heartland Park Rapids to Walker there is a alternate next to the pavement.

There is no "special" stud permit anymore

I recall a story in I believe MN USA mag. That they collected some large dollar amount for the studs fee(I had one on my 92 V-MAX) but the overall damage caused by the use of studs was far less then what was collected. There basically was hundreds of thousands over collected. The only noted damage was small areas at road crossing.
