Absolutely, they have been pumping up sleds like that for years. Haven’t read that garbage in many moons.
Yep they make or break a sled, they helped kill off a few over the years.

The Yamaha Tripples were fairly heavy engines, the new “Single piece” bulkhead is what kept them lighter than the competition for a few years. My SX600r was listed as 11# heavier than my Dads Vmax 600 twin in an identical chassis and the redhead was quite a bit lighter than the Powervalve triples. My SX600R was listed @ 498# and my Viper XTX @ 515# add electric start to the red head triple and it would have been dead even. Anyone know the weight of Redhead or Power Valve triples with carbs mounted? The 1049 is out of my Viper right now and I’ll toss is on the scale quick before Install it to get it’s wieght, I’m really curious the actual difference in wieght.

The staggered compression was so that the carbs didn't have to have staggered jetting.Yamaha made it work the best though with the 700 SX Viper with the staggered compression and the ignition. That allowed the odd exhaust wave to come into the single pipe at a different frequency.
The viper 700 wasn't a dog by any means, but was still close to 20hp shy of an F7, and also down on the Polaris 700.

But still made less hp
It was rated at 125, Yamaha reps told me 3 hp was unseen on the dyno because of the cold air induction. There were lots of 2002’s produced, some performed some didn’t, I was fortunate to have a good one. It was an over achiever.

Problem was some were so so and some ran strong. I was lucky, it was an 800 slayer, had all sorts of bigger sleds I out ran on Lake Gogebic. I put just short of 10,000 miles on it, still ran hard when I sold it.
My dad’s was faster/quicker than mine....knocked off 2003 F7’s with ease. A friend of mine also had one. Mine ran away from him like I had 200 more cc’s....go figure... He had trouble with 600’s.

Yes especially the black/red one....I liked the 04 with knock protection.

Back in the day the red head tripples were lighter than engines than the 700 Polaris twin. I will try to find a pic of a weigh off I saw. They were also not much wider.
I think way to many have forgot how pathetic the old 2 smokes are. Oh the dream of another great 2 stoke. Blah blah blah. I will stick to my ultra reliable 4 stroke Nytro.

Nothing Pathetic about those old triples, that red viper could handle moguls as good as my 2015 viper and cornered better. Bender Big bore with pipes, I’d take it against a stock winder any day. It’s getting a turbo next year!
Any sled is reliable sitting in the garage.
I had just over 10,000 miles on my 99 SXR, 11,500 miles on my 2001 SXR and 5,000 miles on my 2002 viper They were great when I rode them, then I bought my Nytro. Wow what a difference. The constant power and comfort of the 4 stroke Currently I have 13,500. +- on my Nytro and still love it. Waiting for the next upcoming design. I will not go back to a 2 stroke

This is kind of the point I was trying to make. Yamaha needs a 2 stroke 600 competitor. A modern, injected 700 triple is not totally off the charts. Certainly not against 4 stroke but obviously there is a 2 stroke market. The triple optimized for weight would be a really nice package, if they can keep the weight close.Back in the day the red head tripples were lighter than engines than the 700 Polaris twin. I will try to find a pic of a weigh off I saw. They were also not much wider.

Did Yamaha just post a pic of a 2020 SR Viper M-TX 153 on their facebook page? This color scheme looks just like the 2019 Sidewinder L-TX SE and X-TX SE. I don't see this color listed in current 2019 available sleds for a SR Viper so it must be a 2020. Looks very sharp!
Also, note the graphic on the hood. Usually it says Genesis 4 Stroke. This one says Triple Cylinder. Could this be a 2-stroke.....Hmmmmm????
