Sold the Apex. Time for something new. Of course one of the first things I did was install the ZX2!
Checked the mileage, 24,300 miles on the skid. Inspected the skid before install. Things continue to look great! Due to the shock failure at the end of last season, I replaced one shock and since one spring was bent, I replaced both springs. I also had my shocks serviced and had the piston bolt replaced on the used shock. 3,100 miles on the current hyfax and it is still looking good.
For the install, I was going to add a couple reinforcement plates on the outside of the tunnel for the rear mount holes, but after finding the accessory tunnel brackets covered the rear holes, I did not need to add an additional plate. I added a small piece of aluminum flashing over the rear mount holes and riveted them to the tunnel. This should help prevent the bolt from destroying the blue powder coat. The reinforcement plates on my Apex were tore up by the time I sold it.
I can't wait to put some miles on the Nytro with a ZX2

Wow I will LOVE to hear how the nytro holds up to the miles. I still think the apex will be the king of durability but you will be able to prove it or not! Hows the snow look over there? Its coming here in Iowa tommorrow first big storm 12+" and more after xmas hopefully! Finally!

Looks good. Is that only a 121 skid. I agree with Kinger, it will be nice to hear how the nytro stands up to high milage. You are the right guy for the test.

Yeah, I have been waiting for the high mileage reports on the Nytro's but I got tired of waiting! I am actually moving to the Nytro in hopes of finding something that handles the bumps better in the front and hopefully get rid of the things that have started to get on my nerves with the Apex. Things like, the loose steering, muffler cracking, reverse mechanism wearing out, and the seat ripping. I sure do love that motor though. Time will tell, but not unless we get some snow. Nothing on the ground but a watch has been issued for Thursday for some significant snow. Hopefully we both get hit.

Yep, it is a 121.

Broke my shock just like you. Bought skid used in March of 2012. Was supposed to have approx 1500 miles. Took skid apart and all shafts etc were fine. Put a couple of new bearings in and cleaned and greased the good bearings.
Sent the shocks to Pioneer in October just to be recharged and checked.
Installed in my wifes 06 Vector Gt that now has 10XX miles. She has not ridden in 3 years. I figured I would put the ZX2 in this sled and use it for a bagger trip this winter with a group of friends.
It ripped about half a row of guide lugs off the inside of the track. Also bent the spring.
I put approx. 60 miles on this skid on Sunday just to make sure everything was ok.
mdkuni: I guess you would suggest having the good shock taken apart and checked?

You had a piston bolt snap in less than 2000 miles!? That is crazy. I went ahead and had the other bolt replaced in the good shock just because of the miles. Not sure it makes sense in your case but it certainly wouldn't hurt to have the other shock inspected. That way both shocks can be on the same oil change schedule.
Any pics of the damage?

I bought suspension from a TY member that bought the sled as a total part out. He was told that the suspension had approx 1500 miles by that person and that it had approx 500 miles when that person bought it.
Since the suspension history was so vague, I took the entire suspension apart. I replaced 2 wheels and bearings and cleaned and greased all bearings. I checked all shafts and took the springs off the shocks. The shocks seemed fine, no nicks in shafts and they moved smooth and free. I decided to send them to Pioneer Perf and have them recharged and checked over.
I probably should have sent them back to boivin and requested a more complete inspection.
I realize that these suspensions are purchased to be abused. Also this zx2 had the 136 extensions. But put it in the Vector as a 121.
I guess a lesson to be learned is that if you buy one of these used, you better have the shocks completely taken apart.
I did not take any pictures yet, but the parts look exactly like your pictures. It broke exactly where yours did.
So I got approx 62 miles on it.

Wow, certainly an identical failure. AD told me they have never seen such a failure. Curious what they have to say now. Anyone have any ideas on how this failure could happen? I certainly don't know enough about shocks to make a guess. I really believed that my failure was due to fatigue, not so sure anymore.

I don't know anything about shocks either. But if you look at the way the shaft is bent, could the shock have extended too far and was stuck at full extension?
Mine was set at 2 and 4 on pins and #5 on spring collar. My Rx1 is set exactly the same way.
I ride hard and aggressive, and weigh approx 205 w/o gear. I do not jump or ditch bang.

Yeah that almost seems impossible to bend that shaft like that, almost like it bound up or something. I dont even know if thats a possibility! Mine is getting up there in miles and I ride like a idiot sometimes in the ditches around here jumping it like its a plane. If mine snaps then we know we may have a issue. Although I just had my shocks into Hygear and they looked awesome according to them.

Aside from getting a new shock, do you guys think that I should send the good one back along with the bad one to ad boivin?
Let them see if they can find something failing in the good one.
When I sent them to pioneer perf to be rebuilt and recharged, I guess I thought they would spot any internal problems.
I don't want to destroy another track.
The track I destroyed has 1000 miles and looked like the day it was put on the sled.

Did you bottom out hard? I dont think under inspection anyone would really find anything to the naked eye. I just cant see how that shaft could bend?

No, I never bottomed out at all. Was thinking of turning back to four on the shock collar. Suspension was packed full of snow and the next day after the sled melted out, was when I found broken shock.
Since my wife has not ridden the last two seasons, I put this zx2 in the vector gt to take on a bagger trip in either the U P or North Bay early Feb.
The spring is also bent, but figure that was from tearing up the drive lugs inside the track.
Going out to the garage and take suspension completely out.
