Well I spent all day trying clutch kits. Excells recommendations , Ulmer Racing and the clutching on the cheap... Well my conclusion is this.. they all work and pull essentially the same top speed... they all have good points and bad...Those that dont like one in may like the other... its a real crap shoot.
If I didnt tell you what kit you had, you would not be able to tell that much of a difference....
I just needed to try these kits for my own good to see if one is any better then the other.... it came out just like I thought..
The trail was hard, fast and flat... 100 to 101mph was the top speeds.
I would like to try these combinations once more in a UP trail type condition... that are more real world or more everyday and see if they still all perform the same but for now this is all I have.
Take from it what you will.

Yes ... Good day of testing! I agree. Between Excell, Ulmer, COTC, and different belt manufacturers - all had some pros and cons. But once each kit was tweaked, the differences were really splitting hairs. We had 3 different Vipers all consistently pulling 100 mph. I'd say the only setup we did not try was completely stock.

I would agree with Mr Sled. I helped out with the testing today. We had three vipers And results were very similar across the board. We switched riders from sled to sled on multiple runs to try and quantify "feel". Most of the time we could all agree on the low, midrange and top end "feel" and real world results within a certain setup.
What I learned most of all is that belt brand makes a difference. Not so much as one belt being better than another but one brand belt needs a completely diferent setup from another. Case in point, the OEM belt needed much more heel weight than the aftermarket to achieve the same results. The clutches on these sleds is very sensative to belt compound!
At the end of the day I found a setup that will consistently pull 100 mph at 9050 rpm run after run, with great low and mid range pull.
It was a day well spent.

Awesome! I have found same thing other than very small differences in drivability which are personal preference. So what were the results of the testing with clutch kits exactly as delivered and exact settings followed? That is what we pay for since components are all available elsewhere.
Can you guys post what you found here ?:

So final settings which you all liked were Kit recommendations other than one you modded for belt? Going testing tomorrow and would like any help I can get.

Did track length/lug height play any noticeable roll in top speed that you noticed? Quite a lot of stipulation going around about different tracks causing different speeds, would be nice to know that if there's any difference that it's very minimal.

Curious, most of the COTC testing we have done shows an engagement speed of around 1k less than one of the aftermarket mentioned. In your testing was there no big difference in engagement speed or was that one of the differences not mentioned? Not trying to be negative just curious.

I sure think it did... from a short track 1.25 lug to an XTX 1.6 was worth a couple MPH...

Engagement was lower on the COTC right around 2800... I was not a fan of this kit... kind of Lazy and only pulled maybe 1 more MPH difference on top.. the other kits had more fun factor... and it was felt with all 3 drivers and I was extremely disappointed based on all the hype on this site. I spoke with Terry a few times thru out the day...I told him maybe he needs to come over next time... I want to put my clutches on his sled and see if there is something we didnt see... but for now it stands as is.
This is just 3 guys testing.... its only meant to shed some light on others that are having issues and dont give up on your setup... they will work...
If you dont like what you read here then just dont comment......I have guys pming me all the time asking about kits and I only tell them what I can verify.

Curious on the traction comparison on the cobra vs the rip 2? I really liked the cobra last year on my apex. Rip 2 seems pretty good so far, but was wondering if the cobra was really that much better.
