I think you saw my point though, a backfire every once in a while can put a great deal of stress on a muffler. And if its full of gasoline from a failed start and pops it can rupture a muffler. Or maybe these are just junk.....lol.
I figured you were onto something

Muffler blown out
My muffler blew the right side out. Then it blew all of the rivet out of the heat shield. Also melt the plastic side panels of the sled. My dealer and Yamaha took care of everything.
They reassured me, that they are looking into improved mufflers. They believe it is caused by all the backfiring these sleds have.

I was at my dealer today and seen one for the first time. Totally exploded and melted the side panel and the white part of the belly pan. I can't believe it. It's crazy how this is happening! You mean to tell me Yamaha didn't test this thing? I mean these are not small problems that we are having! I'm mean my belt issues, oil separator, this thing has some serious problems! And they didn't address any of these issues for 2015! I just don't get it, is the quality went down that much.

Mine happened at 2100 miles. The replacement was the exact same muffler. Could NOT see any improvements to it. Yamaha even reimbursed me for the gloves I ruined trying to move the muffler away from the plastic. I am wondering if it is going to do it again in anther 2000 miles?

yamahatim you better sell that then. All I see you doing is complaining about it. Big deal a muffler blows apart at 2000 miles. Yeah its not ideal but for a first year sled and a merged sled on top of it, it has been a great platform. I have 2800 miles on mine. Its has a cracked ear on the chain case cover that was there when I did the 500 mile service. Called my dealer and they ordered me a new one and asked if it was leaking. It was not so they said bring it in at the end of the season. Not a big deal. I thought that what warrenty was for???? I don't have to pay for so why get so pissed off???? I love my viper and would buy another one in a heartbeat!

Ours doesn't backfire. Check the fuel you run or ask dealer to address backfiring. Who here as a kid didn't shut off key in gear in your car while coasting and turn key back on to get a huge backfire and blow the muffler up?.........lol

Mine along with other posts indicate these load up in powder. If it only requires deflector plates well lets see them so we can test for them on the second round. Take this seriously, seen a sled catch fire one time cause of this. Maybe they could credit toward a can of your choice.

I never had a Yamaha muffler blow apart before.....guess I was still expecting too much Yamaha quality when it is not the case. To me a muffler blowing apart is a big deal. But since it is an arctic cat I guess it should just be expected then? How does that work?
I was told some didn't have a complete weld somewhere internally. So not much you can do to spot potential issue. The ones I saw that were blown it was on bottom but the shield loosened up first so that and noise is about all you can watch for.

Well if you take it as complaining, well your right! For close to 13,000 dollars for a stock sled I think it should have been tested a little more. I love my Viper and it's great in the trails! And I have said that from day one! The motor is great, in the Nytro. In this chassis there is something fishy! And it's not new. The only thing new is mating the two together. Now in the beginning of the season people were upset with some minor leaks and a bolt not being tight. And so on, now to me that's complaining. But with the clutch issue, the chain case issue, the muffler issue, oil separator issue, limiter strap issue. These are big things! And a lot of these guys have lost out a lot of riding because of them. And I'm sure there are more serious issues. With all that I'm still love My Viper! But I lost my sled for three weeks this year.
With the short winters we all want a turn key and ride! And some have not had this like before with other Yamaha's. I know the issue with the first phasers and Nytro's. I ordered two, pro's but have not givin any money yet to make it official. And I am considering a Viper for My Wife.
But there concerns! And most of these more major issues have not been addressed. So that should make everyone on here a little nervous. Because non of us want our sleds in the shop during the season! You call it complaining I call it being honest! I have had several Yamaha's and have plenty of faith that things will be addressed! When you see the 2015's come out with nothing really changed it makes me wonder if Yamaha is listening?
I'm the one who bought it and added the turbo and I love it! MPI kit has been great and it handles better that anything I have ridden! Takes a little time to get it there, but part of the fun. Everyone that puts a post on here with a new problem is not complaining they are simply stating they are not happy and want this stuff fixed! So don't take it as a bad thing more than please fix thing!

I agree. Things I do wrong I keep my mouth shut - but I feel it is a service to others to let them know what to look for. We are not doing this to bash or admit we were idiots but only to pre-warn for things to look for. This site prides itself on the information shared by its users and sometimes it comes off as frustration because we are, but the reality is we want everyone to know that they are not alone.
It is only my opinion but the reverse actuator failures, PCV ball freezing and pumping oil out, popping out of gear at high speed, muffler explosions, loose fasteners, coolant and oil leaks, dash pods not lighting, clutching and belt issues, blown shocks, extreme cold start & warm start issues, P1338 & 1339 codes, low idle issues Thumb warmer not working, Limiter straps tearing are just some of the issues members have posted on here. Red ones are the issues I have had and have not listed anything that was attributable to the turbo.
I really think Yamaha and Arctic Cat pushed this venture through on a tight schedule. Clutching and mapping was not finalized until days prior to manufacturing. The demo units (preproduction) were nothing like the final production units.
I really hope they are listening because the fixes to most of it is very simple in most cases. A bit more weld here, 1/4# torque on clamps there Flipping the limiter straps over on the XTX.......
It is all very simple stuff like the reverse detent update but if the 2015's present all of the same problems - shame on them
