Most of the guys on this site started out on a RX-1. They are now upgrading to a 2006 version "apex,Attack,RTX". As current and former RX-1 owners we have listened to the arguments about 4 stroke verse 2 stroke. How 4 strokes are heavier and make less power then the 2 stroke competition. I can tell you that after riding an SRX from 1997 to 2002 that MY 2003 RX-1 that was heavier on a scale then any of my SRX'3 felt lighter then any of those SRX's on the trail. The reason it did was the CG "center of Gravity" of the RX-1. Instead of the weight of motor leaning forward Yamaha laid the motor on a backward angle to shift that weight to the center of the sled.

Since 2003 Yamaha Has dropped close to 100 pounds off the current version "2006 Apex". They have also Improved the CG by moving the rider forward. This also centers the mass. Yamaha Also does an excellent job in balancing the weight from front to back to side to side. The RX-1 and Apex have equal distribution of mass which also helps in balancing the sled.

The RX-1 Has shown Many people out there, it's power in most cases when either slight modded or heavily modded can give any 2 stroke a run for it's money. The Current world record on Grass is held by a Four stroke "Simons CPR Turbo". By the End of the Summer I'm betting Jeff will be the First to make a 7 second pass on the asphalt as well.

So before you start worrying about weight and Power take it from a former 2 stroke guy you will love your 2006 Yamaha four stroke!!!!!

I never really argued much about the weight issue of the sled, I know what I snowchecked for a sled and why. I know the Yamaha is a little heavy and I am willing to accept that especially when I loved the feel/ergonomics of the new Apex. Everyone has a right to share their own experiences/info in re-guards to each and everysled on the market. :4STroke:

Just my .02 but I think Jeff has broken into the 7s he just wants to back it up with a few more. If its power you desire he knows how to get it done.

GOOD POINT JTSSRX ;)! :4STroke:

Remember Yamaha has Been A Leader since 1968 with new innovations, and their share of mishaps as well. But stands Tall & Strong today with nothing short of Increditable Sleds Today :4STroke:

I know at least one REV rider that made the switch to the '06 Yamaha . ;)

Ah yes, I rember the convenience of adding oil to a seperate container on our SL396 while my friend's were waiting for their dads to shake their gas cans for them. But having the fuel tank located behind the front bumper, and between the tie-rod ends of the steering linkage, as well as the belt-driven oil pump, led to its share of mishaps indeed, it was still a better sled than most others over-all. Especially when you compared it to an Evinrude, TNT, AC, or most of the brands available back then.

Never-the-less, having a Yamaha 4-stroke is almost nostalgic for me in that respect.

 :4STroke: ;)! Great post, your right. I'm converting - from RX-1 to '06 Attak

Excellent post, I'm converting from a 03 RX-1 to 06 Apex ER. Yamaha has proven itself as the leader, for trail riders. I am very impressed that they are still pushing the envelope (with all the upgrading and improvements). What would you be thinking if you bought a pol 4-stroke, with the blunders from the fushions etc??... cat has not changed there 4 stroke. doo has been sliding as well. Rotax use to mean something, I've seen quite a few melted and towed the past few seasons.

Hey I started out as a Doo rider, switched to Cat and now again to Yami. I switched for the motor.

Now about all this rider forward centralized mass crap. I still not sold on it. For groomed trails I still like the big tripple tripple weight over the ski's handling. Rides flat handles great. My 1000 Pantera (Cat) will out run, out ride and until I switched to Simmons ski's (because all the sled wanted to do is roll with the stockers) out handle my Warrior. It doesn't handle better now just on par more or less. Now of course I'm talking about the old skid and not the new. Maybe if I swapped in the Cat skid my warrior would ride a ton better and maybe handle better as well. I'm contemplating that very idea.

A curious thing is the Pantera weighs 30 pds more and has a huge amount of weight over the ski's but he Warrior still feels top heavy in comparison and will roll way easier.

The new Appex Attack is getting sucked up into this rider forward thing. Everyone thinks they want to be a snowcrosser. Hey the ZR ZL chassis is the best handling chassis of all that are out there now. Why would that be? Its not rider forward. Its an old school groomed trail runner.

My 2000 600 ZL is fast in the twisties will corner with the inside ski 6 inches in the air and no hint of roll over. Awesome on the groomed trails and I guess that is the key. Groomed trails!

So now we go rider forward to handle the bumps on the crappy wooped out trails. But we go forward and up. We put the rider which weighs on the average 180pds up in the air. Now we have to lean more to compansate. Its a vicious circle. My brother loves his Rev in the junk but admits that his MXZ 700 is a better groomed trail runner. Less work to get the same handling. Equal work gets better handling.

So whats the answer? Don't know for sure. What I do know is for groomed trails (my kind) ZR ZL SRX handling in far more important than snowcross handling. I'm hoping that the Attak Appex Fusion will be the comprimize. I worry though that like everyone else they will continue to push this rider forward Rev stand up to ride style to the point that groomed trail sleds will disappear.

I have hoped that the sleds would split into two markets. Groomed sleds and snowcross sleds. Being that the sled manufactures have not had it as good as days gone by money wise. I'm not going to hold my breath.

Oh and I do like my Warrior so don't think I'm bashing it. Its a blast to ride with a motor thats so sweet. Its just an observation on what I see going on.

Well this is my allthough maybe somewhat confused or confusing take on it. May groomed trail sleds live on.

;)!
