When I changed mine I did not remove the chain case, after you have the jack shaft out and retaining ring out, you can use a long extension from the left side of the sled and knock it out,

I just got my 2014 viper back from dealer. I had to wait two weeks to get it in and the problem was the upper bearing in the chain case which disintergrated. Three weeks is not good, I'll trade for an all Yamaha this next season.

Yes because a real Yamaha won't break
RX1 photos by the way, didn't save photos of the Apex engine I blew up. You find a sled that won't break I am all ears.

Not boosted low miles, just goes to show anything can break.

Anything can brake but I'll put my money on a Yamaha outlasting any other brand.

U sure have some bad luck. I have owned piles of Yamaha and only blew them when I screwed with em. And I still have piles... LOL 15 sleds to be exact.

We can be a little harder on them at 10k altitude. I still say they are the toughest engines, just making a point that anything can break. The blown up Ski Doo in my shop was loaned out and blown up...lol.

3400 km busted chaincase heading to dealer in the morning. Just wondering how many repaired chaincases have busted. Guess what I am asking is how reliable is the repair. Where I ride you need a reliable machine or you could be stranded 100 km or more from civilisation at 30 below. Have been a yamaha snowmobile owner since 1971 this is the first one to break. The last 2 I had I put about 15000 km on each and just fed them gas and oil and 1 or 2 idler wheel bearings. I am beginning to see a plan behind this reliability issue, with machines that would go for thousands of km people just kept theirs, not so good for yamaha, no sale and no part sales. Introduce the SR Viper and sales are up but is customer satisfaction. Bought mine because it was a Yamaha and I was hoping that Yamaha had done their homework and had Yamahaized the cat parts that were not up to the job. I think that Yamaha built their name on reliability and from the posts I have read I think Yamaha has to get back in the reliability game. took my machine to the dealer and they found several things wrong, 1 gear case was full of oil almost up to the reverse gear actuator mounting hole, was asked if I had added any oil NO they serviced it last, 2 gear tensioner was worn out and adjusting bolt was turned just about all the way in, again why did I do this DIDN't last time I checked the chain tension it had about 1/2" to 3/4" of thread between the lock nut and the head of the bolt the bolt being finger tight and backed off 1/4 turn as owners manual says. Chain got so hot it almost welded it self in place, tensioner gone, gears gone, lower drive shaft bearing gone, outer chaincase damaged. warranty is still up in the air, apparently I am going to take the blame for this one. will post more later

Finally- parts here from Japan....should be all back together today so I can use tomorrow and Fri.....end of season it seems- lots of melting. Yamaha rep and dealer locally very helpful.....Need to have ALL parts available for these sleds all the time!! Now need to look into YES in case of other issues- could be a bargain over the long haul.... Becoming excited to get a couple more good rides in for the year!!

chain adjustment is wrong in the manual...so you set it to tight because of that and likely caused all the chain case issues

Like Savage said. But you are not to be expected to know everything heck you maybe dont even have internet most times. I didnt know. Just read the manual also last year. My bet is Yamaha will take care of you. If they dont they should have mailed a CORRECT manual to every Yamaha Viper owner.

Exactly what I thought even though the Yamaha rep says that is doubtful..... Makes sense anyway.chain adjustment is wrong in the manual...so you set it to tight because of that and likely caused all the chain case issues

heat is a huge bearing killer, i strongly believe it likely cooked the bearing and having the chain to tight would do that and all the other issues. Their manual is wrong they need to come good on it for warranty without a doubt

I think this is what happened to mine... the Manual that came with the sled stated the incorrect info.
