Cat DNA Strikes again! -CHAINCASE TENSIONER ROLLER WHEEL FAIL

View attachment 146063 View attachment 146064 Ordered top 22T gear , top bushing comes damaged from cat factory :( It probably won’t hurt it but its definitely not Japan quality
If that was all sealed in the package it may have been damage from a machine used to install the bushing etc.usually if it was installed&returned the packaging would show it&believe me they don't check returned items as well as they should.i would say it was tooling marks right from the supplier&obviously wasn't checked.thats why the parts people are so important to be really on their game&catch these mistakes before they get in the customers hands!!

Ripped into the chain case for the 3rd time this season to check on the tesioner, only to find it was just fine with 2400 miles on it. Yanked it out and welded it anyway. It is no problem at all swinging the oil tank out of the way to get at the tensioner.

Our fleet just added a 2015 Viper LTX-LE Blue/Orange with 4000kms.
I was concerned so pulled the chaincase to drain and inspect.
1 bolt was loose and no lock tite.

Too many parts to this Cat case. I would bet if Yamaha designed it you would see something like this

Wow, that is simple. Due in part to no reverse required as the motor spins backwards!! Oh, and look at that nice U shaped seal around the lip......just like Yamaha of old!

This is on the 900T, no motor spinning backwards here.

So reverse is the smaller sprocket below jackshaft? How is it actuated?
See the big washer at the top gear? There is a fork that fits over it. Also look at the long threaded bolt on the chain adjuster. You can adjust your chain using a screwdriver while sitting on your seat. No lock nuts or anything. You can adjust your chain in 10 seconds and I'm not exaggerating.

Gotcha! so electric actuator on the outer case I presume? Stop making a case for Doo, damn it lol.
No electric actuator on X or XRS pkg. Look at the upper left of pic and you can see the manual lever. I don't like the electric reverse because they have had issues with them. The lever is very simple and now very easy to use. You pull up on it rather than down like the older design. Much less effort to use.

The whole point of the pic I posted is a much simpler and more reliable design is possible. There is no reason for them to stick with these outdated designs. I know for a fact if Yamaha was truly involved with designing these sleds stuff like this would not be on their sleds.

Related note, Gary's Yamaha in Caribou, ME is my dealer. Last trip up my tensioner adj bolt had loosened up (another thing to watch, jam nut needs more torque than you would think, It's now a flashlight check every ride etc), oil had leaked out, gotten low, chain ratcheted. so I left the sled there for him to open it up and go thru it as I knew the shift fork shoes were compromised.

I saw this thread this am. texted the link, yes on a Sunday, to my contact (he's cool that way, has a side biz and stores my sled for the year) and he texts me back "We already tack welded both screws". That's why I buy where I ride and let them do the work. They already are at the front end of the learning curve. Score one for a great dealer.
