Yes, and Cat and Yamaha should send some donations to this site. This could have ended up an expensive warranty mess!!Thank Tom for this great site that would have ended your trip.

I have 950 miles on my 18. This weekend will be my last ride. I'll be checking mine in the fall!
My dad has over 6,000 miles on his 2017 LTX. He has never checked the top gear or tensioner!

Yup. It's just luck of the draw. Mine was fine after 2400 miles, but I welded it once I cracked the chain case apart since it's so easy.I have 950 miles on my 18. This weekend will be my last ride. I'll be checking mine in the fall!

Never checked mine until RockerDan's post. Good thing I did! Both screws were loose, approx. 1800 miles. It is now welded.

Did you happen to get a picture of reassembled chain case or have you not gotten that far? I’m curious to see it as I have a 19 winder, and the site glass fell out with 644 miles. $1450 Cad later it has virtually all new guts and cover. Luckily it was warranted, although I had to pay Yamaha dealer in Canada and get reimbursed by my US dealer. Process took about six weeks to get my money back. Many accolades to Gregoire’s in Joliette for getting me back on trail in five days.
Would like to see assembled picture.
Thanks
Hank

I know welding it is probably best, but wouldn't red locktite be enough?

No not really, mine had tight bolts but they were locktighted in the threads of the axle. The bracket with the countersink had egged out slightly.I know welding it is probably best, but wouldn't red locktite be enough?
So I welded the pos.

Great work! If this thread helps even one other member it is well worth it.Never checked mine until RockerDan's post. Good thing I did! Both screws were loose, approx. 1800 miles. It is now welded.
Heck, maybe YAM will even address this issue for all future 998 owners!

More pics. Looks like a poor Loctite job. None on the threads which is where it needs to be, and some on the taper portion as shown. Appears as if someone poured Loctite on but missed the hole entirely. Also note that the screw is painted black. Not sure how that would affect the performance of the Loctite, but I think it needs to be on bare metal.

I really feel like the loctite wear off/out.....due to such high vibration zone....Im sure its on the thread initially but just doesn't last over the many miles of vibes.More pics. I think what is needed here is the inner bushing should be longer with each end grooved with snap rings.I really feel like the loctite wear off/out.....due to such high vibration zone....Im sure its on the thread initially but just doesn't last over the many miles of vibes.

No bolts at all. Maybe BOP or someone could make up a little kit.
I don't like welding because it is a little butcher-ish, but I probably will because something bad is going on here.
Also here is a pic of the bushing and the two machinery washers I will be running on the inside. I will put a half thickness washer on the outside.
