Cooling down the intake temps when warm out - hot!

Mike....have you found a sweet spot for AIT? Meaning, at what temp do you feel the sled performance starts to fall off, is there an approx number that we want to aim to be below when lining up with a bud or running the gun?

thnx
Dan
Anything above ambient and performance drops. Always want as cold as you can.

Just curious if the guys with aluminum charge tubes have compared intake temps while riding with guys with silicone tubes? I saw big temps with the stock tubes in 12 'F on short pulls.

That's a good question, mine are silicone, and I will gets some temps, maybe we can compare them.

The temps when its 32 and above are terrible. Just from what I have found this weekend 32 degrees on a rr grade at between 75 and 95 for the most part. Intake temps never drop below 85. Seen maxes in the upper 90s!!!!

Thats 270 race. 240 is not quite as bad. Would say 5 to 8 degrees cooler

On stock tune I was at 60 yesterday with outside air temp being 40 degrees.

I rode friday and saturday in the up with high temps of about 44 both days The spray coming off the sled in front of me was very hard to keep out of the ic. at every stop i had to unpack it I started monitoring coolant temps early on friday and they didnt change always 170-to-174. I swithched over to iat and this changed a lot warm up in the parking lot was at 60f and this quickly moved to 89f within 2miles. My high for the day was 132f. this was with a full block of ice and a top speed of 96mph ,and only 8400rpm. No higher rpm could be reached and 96 was all in. Made me wonder if i have a boost leak or some other problem. Im all stock other than a orange spring at 2-3. Never had a chance to air it out till this past weekend but im sure this is not normal and am hoping its from the warm weather. 17 rtx le, 1100 miles
,
I saw similar results from my stock zr9k this weekend in old forge. First time on a lake with it so it was the first time I could hold it open for a long period of time. Rpms quickly went to 88-89 or so and dropped like a rock to 8-81 where I maxed out at 97 mph. Changed to a new belt and same result but I was able to pick up a few rpms up to 84 or so and netted 103mph. There is talk on hcs forum about the new belt cat put on the 18 zr9k, it is a softer compound so it is gripping better. I am waiting for real world results people have seen from one cat belt to the other. First time I ever looked at this but my intake temp were 40s-60s trail riding and 80s-90s on lake pulls I believe. At this point I am inclined to think it is more in the clutching then what the temp is as that seems like that will go up as the load on the motor/rpm goes up. My performance was there just hit a wall. Wish I had time to try different things but we were riding so no time to fiddle around.

Has anyone thought of a water to air inter cooler? We build them for doo turbos and they work well. I would be willing to make a big bell core to try if its worth the effort. We make all sorts of inter coolers for turbo sleds and cars.

After a couple miles i can say that the intercooler does help a LITTLE bit. Worth the money? not it all my opinion....
Intake temp still can go from -5*C to +40*C very very fast! :-/.
Compared whit stock intercooler WOT temperature is about 5-10*C lower. When cruising its about the same!
Maybe when its warmer outside the difference will be more...

can someone who has a thru hood intake chime in with their intake temps?

Did a little bit of testing with an fx nytro fan mounted behind my intercooler on a day trip last Friday. I would switch fan on and off through out day and there really was not any drastic difference. Still going to continue testing with some changes, but at this point I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I tried to promote a fan....would just be a waste of a customers money!

Has anyone successfully lowered intake temp?

I have gone back to the stock intake and away from the CAI and found the temps cooler using the stock intake.

I had built my CAI and put cone filter right up into and even touching the factory screen up front as far forward as I could! It just plain ran hotter with the CAI setup.

My buds that were sill running the stock airbox setup were running much cooler intake temps than I, so I decided to go back and at least test it. Guess the CAI should not be called a CAI?

Hard to imagine, but it is what it is and I like it cooler. I can not see any improvement power wise, spooling quicker or certainly not temp wise with a under hood CAI myself. Temp wise the under hood CAI is worse. What am I missing on this CAI craze? I know the side racing at St. Germain was won using a stock intake too. Things that make you go HMMMMM!!!!
