How many vipers with starters going bad?

Add me to this list..... Pulled the sled out today to go for a little rip around the yard ,turned key she stared and stalled heard a weird kick back noise ,went to re start and starts to turn over then spins freely...WTF,only 700 miles on my15 LTX DX and I have a trip planned for later in the week, doubt my dealer will be able to get it repaired in time, disappointed to say the least.

Well it turns out that it's not the starter...?it was the dumbass owner... I had the support bar from my easy Move sled dolly over the exhaust outlet, preventing it starting, is there some sort of valve or sensor the does not let the sled start if exhaust is blocked... Feel so stupid right now

Another fail for me. New starter 700 miles ago, and another no start, this time in mid quebec. Viper had another ride in the back of my truck. This time i think it is the battery that went. 1500 miles on the sled. I was able to get it pull started with my buddies skidoo pull cord. This got me out of the middle of nowhere.

Spoke to one dealer and he speculated it may the reflash causing the broken parts. Reflash likely changed ignition timing and a slight ignition kickback while cranking would cause the teeth to strip. Something has to give!

Nytros use same parts and never had this problem so the cat electronics could likely be the reason behind the problem.

My 14 has been giving me fits lately on hot starts but am holding off on re flash. Would rathe deal with finicky starting than potential metal shrapnel inside my motor.

When I start mine and the engine fire up, I maintain the starter for 2 or 3 sec to make sure the engine is running to prevent kickback. May be this method will help you...

Interesting, electronic components can be damaged by running on low voltage, but that would just mean a starter burned out and not teeth off the gears....unless the starter locks up when burned out. But didn't several people say the starter was fine just the teeth gone?

Both of mine were just failed starters, the teeth are good. I pulled the starter apart this time and one of the magnets cracked in half, fell onto the rotor and ripped the other magnets off. Looks like this caused the rotor to short to ground. I started it with a rope and rode back to the place we were supposed to stay that night and was careful to watch the volt meter on the gages.

Just lost the starter in my XTX... I'm convinced it is due to the reflash and screwed up timing, it had the hot start issue last year at times but never ever did the kickback.

Ya I think I've honestly heard of more issue from 2015 or reflashed vipers than the original 2014's, mine is a 2014, never got the ecu update done and don't plan on it, but I never remember it kicking back at all, it's had misfires it's whole life, but never kicked back on me.

Mine is kicking back now t0o. Did it at least 4 times this weekend. It goes in Tuesday to be checked out. Could be just the gremlins showing themselves on the second year. I am really glade I have Y.E.S. It has paid for itself already this year. Heated seat element broke or burnt out and my chain case exploded because of the bearing. Im good until 2020 with warranty. Then I will be in the market for a new sled. I hope they have a 500 lbs. 165 hp four stroke by then. lol

I am not complaining about my problems. This is by far the best sled I have ever owned for reliability. It has a few problems but what sled doesn't. 6500 miles of smiles so far. I even purchased an XF 7000 this year for the wife. She loves it.

A bad battery can cause starter failures, really. I would load check that battery to make sure.

Barry was yours just the gears or did the starter fail too?
