How many vipers with starters going bad?

How can they tell the throttle position sensor is been "tampered with" and what all can the dealer's see by the ECU ? Every dealer have this ability? Thanks I know the buds system brp uses they can tell all the vitals of the engines life for like the last two minutes .

Paint marked. Ecu data logs just about everything. And it's permanent. Max values

AFR?
Boost? And what do u mean paint mark?
Yes map sensor is logged so will show boost. Afr not sure. Stock narrow band sensor isn't very accurate. As for tps it's held on with tamper proof screws and a paint mark on one. Says right in manual warranty void if tampered with. If sled is under warranty and tps fails entire throttle body rack is replaced as a unit.

View attachment 115238 View attachment 115236 I had to remove the magneto cover because another turbo bracket related problem and look what i found! The starter was still good!

Yamaha was going to charge me for the oil change when my starter let go and i'm in the US. My dealer saw that and said wait a couple days im going to make a couple calls first before I send the bill and I never got it... So I think its more of how far your dealer wants to go for you... My dealer also did not want this to happen again and made several calls into Yamaha, he got the same old crap that I was only the second 2014 starter to let go... He wanted Yamaha to have some sort of fix before I got it back but they had nothing.

I just joined the forum. I have a 2015 XF7000 LXR Cat that I got through the winter with no issues. 1400 km. I am quite concerned about the starter failure so much that I installed heaters to warm the engine for my trip to Cochrane. With this, cold starts were very quick and easy. I also hold the key until it starts and wait for the fuel pump first. I don't think I ever experienced the kick back stopping the engine while cranking.

Anyway, after reading all these pages, I would like to change out the idler gear this summer as a precaution. However, not sure what to use for a gear. Has anyone noticed the 2016 engine has a new gear number. Will that work? Or is the updated 2014-2015 part number a good gear.

The failing gear in question could possibly be a "Powdered Metal" gear with very brittle teeth. This process is where a powder is loaded into a mold and heated under pressure. Many things are made this way including Cat clutch cam arms. The color is a dull grey.

There have been Cat failures as well on a few forums, but nothing like on here. I suppose, there were many more Vipers built than Cats since Cat pushes 2-stroke 600's and 800's.

What is the latest news ?

The gear in the 16.5 motor won't fit the older motors. The gear in our older motors is a different part # . Is it better? We don't know because Yamaha has not said a word. I was holding that updated part# gear in my hand just the other day. Sled half apart. Would only take half hr to replace the gear if that. I passed out of fear it could be worse than the one in motor already with 8000mi on it. Yamaha needs to explain why different part #. Release a Technical Bulletin. Talk to the dealers. Really is embarrassing the lack of communication.

It would seem that MRUPNORTH got a new update gear in his sled the last time his repair was done. That looks like it was back in Jan 2016 or earlier so the new gear has been around for a while and I bet many sleds have it in there from a repair but don't know it. So if the gear is in fact better, then the problems will eventually go away after a repair is done. This may be on purpose to eliminate a recall and keep the problem quiet. Although it's not too quiet here. I don't think many Cat guys know anything about it unless they had a repair, and all of them just think it was a starter failure. That may be the master plan of the companies involved.

HOLY FAWK! This is my biggest fear that my starter or actuator goes and I'm 200+ kms away from anything. My favourite riding area has amazing terrain and hundreds of kms of untouched snow, but hardly any cell service. The majority of the time I ride alone, but have check in times so ppl know I'm alright. Can't believe Yamaha isn't doing anything, but still advertises the "round trip reliability". I don't trust this sled at all.

As for the oil changes, my Canadian dealer told me in order to maintain warranty, I had to have the machine serviced by them. At $500 a pop, I really could've used the $1500 for break in and warranty service towards extra warranty. Then had to fight Yamaha to get the warranty items covered as they dropped the ball.

Likely making a brand switch this fall as this is getting ridiculous...

Don't forget the % of failures is low. Personally yes I think about it everytime I turn the key but have made 8000mi without a breakdown. When a guy thinks about how complicated all our sleds, cars and trucks have become it's always just a calculated risk if something will happen. It's our passion for the sport and our need to do what we do that allows us to move past that risk that's always there no matter what we drive.

At 500 a pop your getting shafted. Hour tops to change oil and filter. Filter does not have to be changed after first change for 12,000kms. Then its only half hour tops. But say oil filter changed all three times even at 120 dollars and hour shop labor oil and filter is haundred bucks tops. On top of that you can change the oil yoursellf and still maintain your warranty. You have been thoroughly shafted! Your dealer is hosing you! As for the gear/starter failures Ya scares the hell out of me too! Shouldn't happen!

So when a foot of fresh dumps, you get so excited to gear up to go for a ride (I've read your posts as you dance in the office), only to go out fingers crossed and hope your $16000 "reliable" machine starts? If it doesn't, oh well you'll just count the flakes as they fall? Really?

With the amount of traffic regarding the failed starters is more than enough for me to question the "reliable" components. Of the percentages, how many have upgraded their ECU with EVO etc? What does Yamaha hang their hat on? Why do ppl purchase their equipment? It was on having a bulletproof machine that you could rely on. My grizzly and Apex have been put thru the paces and NOTHING wrong with them. I've barely touched this brand new machine and components are falling apart.

I've watched this video multiple times laughing, but now feel like this is where I'm headed.

I've already heard the wolves howling...You can polish a turd, but it doesn't mean it's not a POS!

Thank you. It's what I thought and has been the added bonus to my frustrations, but likely won't be returning again for sales or service. Where in NWO are u?

Yes I do exactly that! Have walked many times. No wolves but bear and coyotes seen and heard at night. Still kicking. Be prepared.
