How many vipers with starters going bad?

Okay had a long sometimes heated discussion with a member here that I do really respect his opinion. Not going to make gears. I am a fix it and see what happens type. Some things are just very clear to me how they should be made. I trust some people and places to do it right. But there are many that want Engineering studies and all kinds of technical things done before ever putting a new gear into their motor to fix a problem that really hasnt affect very many of us. This member had the failure himself so I have to respect what he says. If failure happens call Yamaha Dealer and get it fixed. I would be sure the newest gear is used and ride on. Thanks to those that helped and those that probably talked some sense into me. Reality is that on any Snowmobile many things break and we deal with it. Hopefully enjoying even the breakdowns over time. Not going to let fear of them hinder my enjoyment of the sport and people even for a second.

A little follow up on this post. I really can't say enough good things about the boys(Brad) at Markham Mower my Yamaha Dealership. They replaced my starter and gears no charge!!! No charge on labor or parts and they threw in oil change and filter also. Then it came up in conversation that I'm getting married soon and my Jack & Jill is in March. They bought tickets off me and pulled a brand new Stilh gas leaf blower off the self and gave it to me for a door prize.
So you guys in Ontario looking for a dealer that will give you the BEST customer service ever should seriously consider taking your business to Boys over at Markham Mower.
Hey Dicker happy to hear the boys in Markham took care of you!!!! Now get your a$$ back up here and ride her like you stole her!!!!!;)!

That is awesome! I'm lucky to have a great dealer in my area too. I believe He is always one of the top in sales in the country. Dealer relations have just as much if not more to do with brand loyalty.

Interesting. Personally I think a 10% failure rate is unacceptable. I would accept the failures if they were all happening after a set amount of miles/starts. However when guys with less than 1000 miles are having failures, then something needs to be done.

I just bought my Viper, and swore up and down that I, for the first time in my life, was going to leave it bone stock. Now it looks like my best option for trouble free miles is to have the Evo flash done. Really disappointing to me.

If your sled has trouble starting and kickbacks yes go get flash,PCV Tune and or get the new gear Yamaha has now. I believe it was less than $40 and install it. Mine has lasted 7370mi now with no issues. If you would like to have gears made the company I was going to is called Hanover Gear. They are very helpful but are not cheap. Best gear manufacturer in USA. Go for it. But keep in mind odds are it wont happen to you and if it does Yamaha covers it. Ride season is too short to worry.

Is there some thing like an AA you can join that will help you with that, if you've been doing mods till now it won't be long.

I thought all this talk about making new gears and such, well was kinda crazy. You know that's gonna be very expensive, and it's covered for most people. Honestly it shows the inexperience that a lot of have. There really is a much simpler way of correcting the problem. Most local machine shops have small heat treat ovens, and can temper the gears back down a couple of RC, so they are not so brittle. That is if your really worried about it. M2C.
Please don't take offense just my opinion

For folks that ride near their home, this starter problem is less of an issue. For me, I ride 15+ hours away, and for 3 to 5 day trips, 3 times a year. For me, it is worth getting to the bottom of this issue, no matter what it takes.

The nearest dealer to me is 8 hours away.

I think you guys are taking a chance building your own gears or heat treating the ones in your sled. Do we know what kind of steel we are dealing with? Do we know how hard the proven Nytro gears are? How hard the Viper gears are? Are they the same materiel? I believe that in order to even temper the steel you will need to know the carbon content of the steel. And if it gets too hot you may lose any hardness you have now. Just my 2 cents.

All four applications of the 1049 motor, Venture/Vector/Nytro and Viper use exactly the same starter and starter gears, the Viper is the only one with the gear issue.
The Nytro had problems the starter relay freezing and taking out the starter but not the gears.
The major problem is the Cats mapping of the ECU, fuel or timing or both plus putting the battery 4 feet farther away than any other application and not putting on heavier cables may also contribute to the problem.
EVO seems to have solved the mapping issue, and for you that may be very cheap insurance.

Yep, sounds like evo for me. Sucks that I will lose my warranty though. ..

Warranty is more dependant on your dealer than Yamaha.
Other than a catastrophic engine failure that can be directly connected to the EVO flash warranty should not be an issue.

Local machinist told me he would use the old gear first to find the proper draw temperature. Then he wouldn't take too much out of the new gear. $60
Pretty cheap in my book. Gears are just to brittle that's all. More than likely they had a bad batch that were to hard.
