I never had a problem with the primary rollers on 2 of my boosted Vipers. Both had high miles.
Not sure why, just didn't have a problem!
I tested viper primary for about 1200 miles. Worked great, but did not have the overdrive like the winder primary, hence 2-3 mph less top speed. Can't have that...I'd rather buy rollers!! Lol

The Sidewinder clutch is ( IMO), a huge pile of garbage. They took webbing away, have different size sheaves and changed the weight bolt location. I want to know what kind of drug Yamaha is on to bring out a clutch like that.
Like titanrcr said, now we are throwing 280-300 hpr to these.
Turbo Viper guys all over the world running over 270 horse and no roller problems with their 3 arm previous style clutches. Only the SW clutches.
I have a viper 270+ with sidewinder clutch and no wear on rollers yet, have over 4000km on it. But i go with hh weights and 15.7mm rollers. Have start to look around for a new primary but for me it works great.

I just measured the width of a stock Sidewinder roller at .575"
I then measured the width of a stock Team/Cat roller and it is .850" wide in a new Team I have sitting here.
So the cat/Team roller is almost 50% wider and the spider is made of steel. On top of that, the clutch arm bushings are also wider by a whole bunch.
The wider roller is going to take a lot more abuse before wearing out in the Team vs. the Yamaha drive clutch. The Team clutch on the 998 does not rattle or wear out roller bushings.

Great info Mike....If I stick with this sled another season Im pretty sure a TEAM is going on mine.I just measured the width of a stock Sidewinder roller at .575"

Keep me posted if you do some testing with it on the winder.

Now I wish I would have done more research before buying a 18 winder holdover...I'm new to yammi, 4stroke, turbo ect. and always thought yamaha kinda set the bar on clutching from what I've heard in the past. I was thinking of doing a hurricane trail bundle but now having second thoughts as that sounds like that aggravates the problem...as it should... Coming from the 800 cat world, and thinking those clutches made plenty of noise, I didn't have any mechanical clutch issues for several thousand miles. Good or bad, thanks for all the info on here. The Sidewinder clutch is ( IMO), a huge pile of garbage. They took webbing away, have different size sheaves and changed the weight bolt location. The TEAM clutch has non-replaceable bushings and there are no available parts for it either..... Cat recommends you discard the clutch and buy a new one. The bushings are metal and rolled after installation on the cover and the movable sheave. We at Thunder Products are working on a bushing replacement for the cover and movable sheave....but will still be a lot of work to machine bore the stock bushing out.
Thru testing, owners can extend the life of their TEAM clutches by putting on one of our 911 covers. The cover bushing is usually the first one to go out and then takes out the movable bushing. Our 911 cover will extend the life of your clutch.
All the Iron Dog Race sleds using our 911 covers finished the race including Todd Palin and Shane Barber.

SPM, they aren't that bad. Sure there are a few minor issues, however, Yamaha sells individual parts for the clutch, where most other brands have you throwing the entire clutch away when one part fails. Now I wish I would have done more research before buying a 18 winder holdover...I'm new to yammi, 4stroke, turbo ect. and always thought yamaha kinda set the bar on clutching from what I've heard in the past. No matter what rebuilding components, rebalance etc, and say your cover, price comes close to new one unless you have grunt tools etc. not a win win, Put 911 cover on when clutch is near new will last longer, did this on my 1100 turbo.

Don’t worry too much, things get really scrutinized here. You’ll get used to it. View attachment 143442 View attachment 143443 View attachment 143444the team clutches have been exploding too. They pop up on some of the Facebook sw/tcat groups here and there but usually get taken down quickly where the exploded yamaha clutches are allowed to stay posted.
Yes, have seen a few of these. They start cracking between the cooling fins of the cover, then the spring pushes out the center while the weights keep pulling on the movable sheave that is bolted to the outside of the cover...."BANG"
