I was wondering what you guys think of these lightweight batteries?? What will I sacrifice with a lightweight battery? It seems to me that these lighter batteries must have less overall power, I realize that some of them do list the same amount of CCA but I am looking for some real world experience!! Lightweight means nothing if I'm sitting on the mountain with no power and skinned up knuckles from my makeshift clutch rope!!!! Any help would be great guys!!!! Thanx alot Scott

Scott,
I have ran two different lightweight batteries in my '03 SCRX-1mtn. The first was a Batcap Model 400 (weight 5 lbs) www.batcap.net. I used it untill adding the SC Kit from Mountain Performance and, I still use it in my Kawasaki STX 1100 DI PWC. The second is the Odyssey Model PC 545 that came with my SC Kit (weight 12.6 lbs) www.odysseybatteries.com/batteries.htm.
Both have never had a problem with starting an engine that was flooded out from a roll over etc. They will crank a warm engine over for a long time. However, both have had problems cranking over a cold engine that has sat outside overnight in -25* F weather. One gallon of hot tap water poured over the engine and both would fire the motor right up though.

Thanx Jim, you are getting some good life out of that one battery!!! I am leaning towards an interstate sealed gel cell battery.... the dealer is getting the particulars (price weight etc ) for me on monday, I have had the best luck with interstate batteries in my other items, trucks boats etc. Also what is the best way to start these things in the event of battery failure??? You can use those jumper leads, but can you boost off a two stroker?? Thanx again Scott

Scott, I have never had a complete battery failure to date. I don't even caryy one of them jumper leads for charching from a 2-strokes headlight. My best guess is they would charge a battery that is down a max of 80% but no more than that.
I run interstate in all my vehicles also but when the sled was N.A. I got wanted the lightest with enough power to crank the motor over. At 400 CA and 5 lbs the BatCap was the one. The SC kit came with the Odyssey which sits sideways right under the intercooler so I stuck with it since it fit the included battery tray. As you can see from my other post there is a 7.6 lb difference between the two. The extra HP doesn't seem to mind it though

I use the YTZ10, its out of the R1 bike. The battery that came in the 03/04 weights about 20lbs plus the 3lb bracket. The 05's went to the YTZ14 with an alu holder, not sure of that weight. I just made a bracket and put the 10 down in the nose just ahead of the oil filter, fits real nice in there, just about like it was suppose to. The 03/04 sleds has 230 cca, the 05 went to 210 cca, so I thought the YTZ10 at 190 cca would be okay. It weights just less than 8lbs, and its in lots of atv/bikes/etc, cost me $100 from the dealer. Also never had a probelm starting it in the mountains. But don't ride here in eastern Alberta as it never snows. You will need something that converts ac to dc to charge off a 2 stroke sled. But with this sled of mine, the 2 stroke don't want to ride with me, seems like all I ride with is 4 strokes,

Thanx again guys!!! Very good replys!! Well I found a interstate with 190cca and a weight of about 7.5 lbs. My dealer is looking for something better!! I would like to have at least 225cca and stay in a low weight and price range!!! I just seem to want it all don't I!!! Also Jim, what kind of range can I expect on a tank of fuel?? An aprox range running 10 -12 lbs on the MTN just a ballpark would be nice, I am building some steps/protectors out of aluminum to go on the tunnel (by the rear heat exchanger hoses) and I was wondering if I should build a little gas rack or not!!! Thanx Scott

Scott, that depends on the snow your riding in. I usually see about 80 miles to a tank riding in snow conditions shown in this video. http://media.putfile.com/BlgsRX-1mtn-SC--10lbs-boost

That does look like a strong battery Mikey, but I was hoping for something a little lighter, in the 8lb range and also something that doesn't cost a mint!!! My local guy is looking for one, I like to buy local because if and when I need another he's right there, not 1-2 weeks shipping away!! Does anyone know a part number for an interstate or something I could get to fit these weight restrictions and have some decent juice (at least 200cca and 10-11 AH ) without costing an arm and leg??? Thanx all Scott

Actually I researched this extensively last year. Guys like Cubby talked me out of the little BatCaps.
Odyssey is in my motorcycle, and the little 12 lb 680 is in my Nissan believe it or not.
This is the one I decided on, and I think it is the one Yamaha uses on the Apex.
Most jolt for the pound 7.7 lbs 210 cold cranking amps, couldnt find anything better

I went with the YTZ12S relocated down in the bulkhead. 210cca, 8.1 lbs, $70. No problems at all. Get rid of that stupid overweight, huge airbox and you can reach right down in to your oil filter!
