Mechanical Power Steering for Nytro - MPS

I went with SB shims and pins, Oilite bushings, powermadd hinged riser (budget OFT), new tuner IIs, the Bergstrom full setup, triple points inner, wear bars outer, ski savers, rubber shims and reversing the rubbers. All equals a new location for contact patch on snow and better leverage on bars. Zero twitch and never felt steering was "heavy", more solid and zero play. Stock skis, carbides, steering bolts and bars felt disconnected, loose and sluggish, maybe heavy too, but I dont mind some tension as at speed equals feel to me when tight, slow might be heavy feeling. Bottom line stock has a lot of negatives that add up.

Apologize for delay in getting this kit to market, but it's here. Could be a few days until I get it on website. Feel free to contact me direct to order. Retail will be $300 on these kits.

Looks top notch as usual... Thanks for the Nytro support.

Very nice!

Couple of questions. Since the Nytro and Phazer share an almost identical spindle, do you think you'll be able to make one for the Phazer?

And along those same lines, do you think it would be possible to design one for the similar but wider Venture Lite/MP? Since I need new outer tie-rods, I would rather drop three bills for this than the OEM outers. I think a few guys would be interested.

I hear ya. They were used in 09 on the MTX, and also in 2010 on the base model MTX. Yamaha introduced the 8HK spindle to try and improve the front end handling characteristics but missed the mark. The tie rod attachment point is in the wrong place as well IMO.

Quick question. What is the increase in turning radius with the tie rod end in the aft position?

That was my first thought when I saw this. The tie rod travel is limited by the steering post so there is a decrease in spindle rotation as you move the steering end further away from the center of rotation. I'm not sure if it's significant enough to worry about without doing the math but it would be nice to know before spending the money on this.

When set in the easiest setting you loose about 10 degrees of rotation. It's noticeable when in parking lots and slow speed maneuvers, but reverse makes up for it. When on the trail and cruising at speed its not even a factor.

For some the loss of turning radius probably isn't a big deal and the easier steering outweighs the negatives. There's really no way around this when using leverage to reduce the steering effort. Other than this one small detail it looks well done and for some Nytro owners should be beneficial.

Grizz, you know how my sled is set up. I just ordered the kit from Travis, can't wait to install it! With the adjustments you suggested and everything else I have done to the sled, I have increased ski pressure other than that the sled is excellent! I believe this will be the final piece to the Nytro puzzle! It will be my final piece anyway!

Reverse may help in a parking lot when the sled does not turn sharp enough, but only there. And, not all Nytros have reverse. Mine doesn't. On the the trail if you need that extra 10-15 degrees of turning, it is because you really need it. Off trail and mountain riding it is not even a debate. "Adjusting" the steering post stops may give you back some of what you lost.

for what its worth, I made a similar mod to mine when it was near new, I also tried different increments. I didn't like the added movement it took to trail ride. It wasn't tight turns that bothered me, it was the unatural feel of having to move the bars so far while riding. couldn't get used to it and went back to stock. switched to simmons gen 1, relocated steering post and put triple rates on front shocks. I have had it this way for years and am very happy. As far as the winder goes, I put pilots on and can't imagine it needing to steer easier, its 1 hand with pilots already. the nytro is the hardest steering sled I have ever seen, but skis make a huge difference

Purchased MPS for my Nytro XTX. It is bit pricey for what it is but it work! We road 200 miles in Baldwin in all kinds of snow conditions and I absolutely love it. I did all the shims and relocation and limiter strap suggestions previously. I seriously think this one mod will take care of the heavy steering and this should be the first change made. I am running the crappy Yamaha ski with duelly carbides. Turning radius is bit larger but nothing to complain about. Great Job Travis. I was able to steer this beast on hand. Never thought that would happen.
