The gear probably wasn’t clean and had a large piece of something sticking to it from the gear lube. When the sprockets started turning the piece got wedged between the gear and chain causing damage to the link. Gear lube is very sticky. If it was set on a dirty floor could have been anything. Or it could have had a piece in the chain.
