Northern MN TY Ride Jan. 18-19 CANCELLED!

I fish White Face on occasion. and yeah other than 39 on Sat and 45 on Monday it is looking like upper 20s for a max the next week or two! lets just hope we get something decent from this possible storm on Sat.
And yep as to the snowmobile tracks, ive seen them all over, there are a couple in my yard LOL (had to load them back on the trailer)

Looking back through pictures of the last Northern MN TY rides, I don’t think we ever had more than 8 sleds. I know the first year with 6 sleds we put on over 220 miles that Saturday. If you look at past TY rides (2010) there is a JPG image of a snowmobile map with the route we took that year highlighted. Where we go will depend on snow conditions at the time of the ride and how many members we have with us. We could go as far north as Orr, as far south as Canyon, As far west as Grand Rapids or as far east as Hoyt lakes or Ely. Just depends on what people want to do. I personally would like to do another 150+ mile trip on Saturday, but we’ll do what’s best for everyone and make sure everyone can come. Two years ago snow conditions pretty poor, and trail riding was pretty much nonexistent. Everyone in the group was great sports and we pretty much ditch banged and even created our own trails through the woods in a few places. We even managed to find enough snow to get everyone stuck a time or two.

How are you guys looking on snow up there?? we only have about 5-6in down here. though lets hope we get some more with this system on Sat.

I thought snow! it didnt work. RAIN! ugh. I did get to take my sled out on Fish Lake a bit. Just because i needed to at least test it out. just about 8inches on the lake. Now we need more snow!

Pretty much the same here. We didn't get as much melting as I expected with the rain. The temp was right at freezing. We now have a good hard/icy base. All we need is a good 8"+ dumping and I think we'd be looking pretty good. I've heard a lot of the lakes are ride-able. They haven't put markers out on Vermillion yet, but I've been told they have 7+" of ice and enough snow cover for sleds (As of Friday night 12/14/12.)

As of today we still do not have enough snow for our ride, but a lot can happen in 3 weeks. I am going to be out of the country Jan. 6th - Jan. 13th. By the end of the day on Tuesday Jan. 15th, I will post if the ride will be cancelled or not due to snow conditions. I believe they told me there is a 24 hour cancellation policy at the Chisholm Inn and Suites. I did post alternate lodging options, but I don't know what their respective cancellation policies are. If anyone booked lodging please make sure you don't get burned in the case of a cancelled ride.
We currently have an icy base but not enough cover to ride or get the groomers out. One good 8"+ snowfall and I'd think we'd be in business. Everyone, think snow!
I have only heard from a couple of individuals who were planning on making it to this ride. If you think you may come, please give me a heads up so I can get an idea of number of people and attempt to plan a route accordingly. Also, I originally stated in the event of cancellation due to lack of snow, I'd host an ATV ride in its stead. There is a lot of area where it is legal to ride ATV's nearby. I haven't heard if there is any interest in this option.

If the snow improves I'm 95% sure my wife, daughter and I will be coming up.

As I stated before, both Bieniek and I will be making the trip up there. You have booked the rooms for the night of the 19th, correct?

If that's the case and if we have enough snow, we would be willing to lead a group up to Chisholm very early Saturday morning from the Duluth area.

A block of 10 rooms was reserved for the 18th and 19th. Look at the original post but I believe the cutoff date for the rooms was Jan 4th. After that, they would be let go to general public. At the time I requested a block of rooms, there was no conflicting hockey tournament the same weekend. When there is a tournament, hotels fill out fast. I'd suggest you make your reservations ASAP I think they had a pretty resonable cancellation policy if we pull the plug.
We've been been getting a 1/2" here and there. I have seen some sleds out at this point. It would be marginal at best, but I think it may be rideable. I'm hoping by the time I get back from my vacation, we'll have a good 6"+. As I said before, I'll make an official call by the end of the day on Jan 15th. With the exception of the members riding up from the Duluth area, I believe everyone will be trailering or local and could trailer if needed. My thought is worst case scenario, we could trailer up to Lake Vermillion and ride the lakes for the day. I do have a 4 place trailer and would have at least 2 open spots if that's what we decided to do. At this point the groomers still don't have enough to work with on the trails, and have not been out to the best of my knowledge.
Keep thinking snow!

As it is right now it's very iffy, I've played around on my phazer II but I haven't taken the MTX out yet. Another 4-5 inches minimum to trail ride. Vermilion to Burntside chain of lakes is rideable but all lake riding isn't that much fun IMO.

Any news? Some one please tell me we got snow?

Got back from the Dominican Rep. late Friday night. 42 degrees and rain at the airport in Mpls. Held out a little hope that the northern part of the state got some of the big storm that went through, but pretty dissappointed last night when I got home. Looks like we got a bunch of rain as well followed by a little snow. At this point I wouldn't even ride on the lakes I've seen as they are all iced over. Its early Sunday morning yet and I just got back from vacation. I'll try and do a little scouting today and get word out on Monday, but things don't look good right now.
