Performance mufflers

The PEFI muffler has amazing build quality and fit. It is also very quiet. It does give up a fair amount of hp over better flowing 2.5” mufflers. I chased a slight underboost condition at the end of last winter with a 1 particular tune and finally decided to swap mufflers and gained boost, rpm and reduced spool time. My sled was less impacted by the muffler on certain tunes than others. It fits the bill perfectly though for most riders as its quiet and flows much better than stock. Attached is a track dyno sheet from my buddys old zr9000rr comparing the pefi vs dd tech2 muffler. Red line is pefi muffler, blue line is dd tech 2.

^^^^^ this is the information I was talking about.
Thanks justinator

What’s the decibel difference between the 2? And how bout the D&D, is there the dreaded drone?

The dd tech 2 is probably one of the highest flowing 2.5” mufflers on the market and makes good power but wasnt designed to be quiet. I havent heard one personally was told it was quite loud. If your happy with the pefi muffler performance and sound then I wouldnt change it. Yes there are some gains to be had but at the expense of noise. I think the other popular 2.5” mufflers on the market fall somewhere in the middle of this dyno chart with hp and reasonable sound levels.

Interesting as I believe they claim 320 on pump gas with that muffler. 3” exhaust makes more power than all of the 2.5” but you can’t make them quiet.

Makes sense power= noise

On my tuned 2019 XTX-LE I have run:
-stock muffler...too low on power and still not real quiet
-TD Super Q 2.5"...great power but too noisy for me and seemed to vary on sound...maybe something amiss inside muffler
-Hurricane Trail Muffler...great power not super noisey but still loud
-This year I am trying TD 3" Stock Mod...jury still out

You certainly have tried a few Bob. I like how you state that the stock exhaust is not real quiet. I had a smm done in 18 by my dealer, it offered the stock size inlet with a 3”thru pipe and a 3” outlet. It was louder then stock but not what I call loud at all. My riding buddy had the same tune as mine but kept his stock muffler. I kept telling him that his Sm was louder then mine when running wide open. So one day we took turns trying both sleds on a really nice piece of trail, so we were able to blast by while the other got to just sit and listen. Completely different tones when comparing the exhaust notes, but we both thought that the stock muffler sounded better and as loud! At idle the smm is noticeably louder with it’s deeper tone.

This year we are both trying the TD Super Quiet 2.5” and MS 17 tune.
I will say, that in my garage or the trailer, just idling or enough rpms to move the sled, the TD SQ 2.5” sounds identical to my old smm set up!

Hope you find a quiet enough set up Bob, that still offers additional power.

What was the performance gain from your stock modded to your buddies stock muffler?

The td sq is relatively quiet till you start building boost, then its gets kinda loud, not obnoxious but its got some volume too it.
A modded muffler that utilizes the stock size inlet will only flow as good as the stock muffler imo, maybe a very minor improvement,an exhaust can only flow as good as its smallest restriction

We both thought there was a little bit gained, but then he added a header and the edge was his for sure.

Like Justinator said above, I bet your mod stock with 3" all the way through would have shown more significant gains. Your buddy is running the header into a stock can?

Yes many have said that I would not see any gains because of the stock 2” inlet on that copy of a D&D smm. But I did see a bit!

He was running his header into his stock can with the MS16 3 bar.

This is another season for both of us, we are mixing it up again, just trying for dependability and more power.

I was pretty happy with last years set up and here I go adding another 15 hp. Yes I am addicted to Boost and that fricken PULL!

There is no doubt that Hurricane's Trail muffler makes good power. Dave told me all his tunes and dyno runs are using their Trail Muffler...nice it comes with shields and everything attached as well.

Looks almost identical to Precision’s muffler, I would bet between the hurricane trail muffler & Precisions they would be real close in power.
