Last friday my dealer started the assembly of my new ride, a '08 Apex RTX.
Standing on it's own skis
First 15 minutes of idle.
Start odo.
The RTX close to the turbo in it's new home.
First kilometers/miles ridden, let the break in begin.
Saturday morning outside my house, the Apex are ready to ride. Got time for a morning ride while wifey and kids where out shopping
In the afternoon we headed out to our cabin on the lake. The Apex's first visit to lake Gagga and our cabin on the lake.
Sunday morning we went fishing on lake Ceagguljavri. Wifey caught one, too small, we let it go. Fish was not in the mood to bite, after an hour of fishing not catching any more than the one wifey got we headed back home to our cabin.
At the cabin we lit up the campfire and roasted a few hot dogs, made coffee, and brought soft drinks for the kids, nice
In the afternoon, loading up preparing to head our way home.
End odo.
First impression on the '08 Apex RTX - WOW what a nice sled, great suspension, I like it

Todays ride was partly work and partly fun. Me and two guys from the county administration trail service went out today to check out trail markers on a part of Porsanger county snowmobile trail system, making the trails ready for easter holidays
Start odo.
Warming up the RTX, ready to leave home at 0900 hours.
I rode over to my friend and co-worker at the county administration. He loaded up his Rekka sleigh and off we went. We rode trail 15, first pic is shot up the Brennelva river.
First stop was at my friends cabin in the Rochi valley where we picked up some more gear and off we went to meet the third guy.
And then we where three Today I had to stop to take pics all over the place. Weather was just great, hardly no winds, sunshine, temps at -10C or 14F midday, temps dropped to -15C or 5F when before sunset.
Next pic was taken up in the mountains, my new sled with the mountain Halkkavarri in the background.
At each intersection the county have now installed poles with markers, directions and trailnumbers on them. Very nice for those who are not too familiar with this region At this intersection we changed direction onto trail 14.
It was a very beautiful day indeed. Conditions are perfect because we have got a foot on fresh powder lately, and another 2 inches last night
At the next intersection. The Luostejohka valley in the distance.
The mountain Suonjirgaissa in the distance.
On our way to the next intersection I had to shoot more pics of my sled and the valley Luostejohka.
At the next intersection at Vansjohka.
From this intersection to the lake Suolojavri the trail markers where missing??? After driving around we found that they had been placed in the wrong valley, we collected all markers and put them up where they were supposed to be. The Luostejohka valley to the north west.
At the next intersection in the Vansjohka valley.
At the penultimate intersection we had to set up a pole and signs of direction. We dug a hole 2-3 ft deep in the snow and placed the pole in the ground. When summer comes and the permafrost melts the pole will be firmly atteched to the earth.
The pole and direction signs finally up and secured The mountain Suonjirgaissa in the distance.
When most of the work was done we decided to climb the mountain.
A view from the summit at 1029 meters or 3100 ft.
View to the north.
To the east, the Rastigaissa region.
To the south.
To the west, the Halkkavarri and the western gaissa region in the far distance.
To the north west.
Our sleds at the summit.
Pics shot from the decent.
The back course.
Last intersection to check and add trail markers, in the upper part of the Luostejohka valley.
Pic shot in the direction where we came from.
After work was done we decided to follow the trail all the way up the Luostejohka valley. We wanted to ride thru a mountainpass and down the valley on the far side of the pass, I wanted to shoot some pics of the Porsanger fjord (the arctic ocean).
On our way out west to the pass.
In the pass my friend changed the belt. Nice terrain
The RTX up in the pass, shot in the back course.
Finally we closed in on the fjord. This year the sea ice did not freeze over, not cold enough and too little snowfall for the salty sea water to freeze up.
We continued down the valley to Caskil where the Sami have their collecting fences for their reindeers.
We took a break, ate some choklate, drank coffee and soft drinks. When done we returned back into the mountain heading home.
At lake Gurrujavri we met another good friend. He was out fishing but had not caught any, fish was not in the mood to bite today he said. After talking the usual sled stuff, weather and fishing... we set course for home.
Up on the mountain ridge Vansnjunnis my friend ran into problems with a loose track so he had to make trailside adjustments to his track. He managed to tighten his track enough to make the ratcheting problem disappear and off we went.
It was getting late in the afternoon and the sun was about to set. Temps had dropped a lot. A view from the Vansnjunnis ridge overlooking trail 14 heading to the west.
End trip.
End odo.
Very nice ride today together with friends Tomorrow I might have to ride alone, but I will go out anyway. My RTX will reach 500 kilometers or 300 miles tomorrow if all go as planned.

After buying a new sled, suddenly wifey wanted to go riding with me. Before buying it I had told wifey everything about how well it rode, the great suspension, light steering effort, studs installed, great riding ergonomics, now she took me up on it and said the new sled was her whenever she wanted to go riding. That is just great news to me, always nice to go riding with wifey BTW - she really liked the new sled.
Start odo, Apex RTX.
Start odo, RX-1 Turbo
Wifey is ready to go riding. I'm a proud husband... finally having wifey with me riding
Up in the Rochi valley, we usually make a short stop at this intersection.
Up at our cabin on the lake Gagga.
When buying the new sled I also bought new and matching riding gear for both of us; helmet, goggles, gloves, jackets, bibs and shoes.
Our sleds and the Nila sleigh
End trip, RX-1 Turbo.
End odo, RX-1 Turbo.
My brother in law is building a cabin close to ours at the lake Gagga, he was just about to drive home in his car so wifey decided to go with him. He has a large trailer so we loaded his Apex RTX and the RX-1 Turbo onto the trailer. I rode our Apex RTX towing the Nila sleigh back home.
When entering the lower parts of the Brennelva river, close to the ocean a blizzard was coming in from the west. You can see it coming in the following pics.
The Apex RTX and the Nila at the Brennelva river, close to the sea.
Before the blizzard hit I stopped by a good friend a few miles from the Brennelva river. He was working on his Phazer FX Turbo, he had overheated the engine, cooked the rings and lost compression.
The Phazer has a modular assembly, nice. The whole front suspension comes off in one piece
Jack up the front of the sled with the front suspension removed and the engine drops right down and out.
Engine work in progress.
Finally at home after helping my buddy mounting the headgaskets and head to his engine.
End trip, Apex RTX.

Nice pics. Glad the wife wants to come along with you! Sounds like you had fun.
Question...in a lot of the pics from the last 2 posts, looks like you actually have some smooth trails to ride (even though you don't have groomers). How often do you get to use the power of that turbo? That riverbed looked nice...

You're right we do have smooth trails at times when weather and snowfall have been good to us. Sometimes the right amount of snow and wind does smoothen out the trails in the mountains. The last ride on the eastern mountain plain had about as good trail condition as can be without a groomer The rivers usually offers good trail conditions most of the winter, so does a few of the lakes where the wind does not hit too hard and form drifts hard as concrete. Now when the easter holiday season is over there are hardly no smooth trails left execpt for the lakes and rivers :-( luckily it's snowing with a breeze blowing, one can only hope that the trails have been smoothened out in a few days time.
There are not many places or days every season that I can use the full power of the turbo for 2000+ ft WOT. Have managed to get her up to 215 kmt or 133 mph on speedo so far this season. I could use a plowed lake to be able to run the turbo to the limits that's for sure.

Just a little more... sadly
We're down to the rocks and gravel at places down in the valleys. The mountains offers the best snow conditions. Farther out the fjord closer to the coastline they got 1 ft on fresh snow last friday morning
Thanks Bob, the best of our season has just started, days are getting longer and soon the daylight saving makes up for even longer days of riding. I will keep on documenting my rides the way I have done so far. Many more pics from Finnmark, Norway will be posted in the weeks to come.
With 6 weeks left I'm at the average mileage for the last few seasons. I hope to bump up at least 33% on last years mileage of 3000 kms or 1860 miles. I'll ride until there are no more carbides left, LOL, late May, no snow .

Easter holiday 2008.
On wednesday March 19th we trailered out the fjord to Olderfjord, where both our parents live, to stay with them for the easter holidays. Also my old man celebrated his 70th anniversary the following thursday. We started out the day by visiting a fishing contest on a lake nearby Olderfjord, we did not participate tho. The weather wasn't the best, it kept on snowing the whole day and well into friday. Sorry no pics taken because of the snowfall :-(
On the other hand there where about 200 sleds and about 400-500 people gathered on the small lake that day actually way more people than residents in town of Olderfjord. Way cool, a lot of visitors are great for business I guess. After towing the Nila with my wife and kids home in the afternoon I went out alone on the Apex RTX for some mountain riding.
Start odo.
Well up on the northern mountain plains close to the coast line I encountered whiteout conditions, all I could see was the red trail markers. I rode for a few minutes before I stopped and shot these pics.
Landscape is starting to disappear.
It's getting worse.
At this point I decided it was no use riding any further up the mountains, visibility was very close to zero, the next trail markers was starting the fade so I turned my sled around. No need to add work to the rescue service at the 330 Scvadron at Banak Airforce Station, Lakselv. My friend was on duty, would have been embarrasing for me having him to come flying rescuing me LOL. He is the onboard mechanic on the Sea King helicopters in service at the Norwegian Rescue Service, the 330 scvadron.
On my way down from the mountains weather cleared up some.
Riding conditions was fairly good with all the new fresh snow we got. At this time we had got about 8" of fresh powder with more to come.
The next day after the blizzards finally came to a halt. We'd got 1 ft of fresh powder since the day before.
My cousin did rent this Arctic Cat z370 for the holidays. Pic is taken where he left it the day before, nice snowfall.
Outside my fathers house. The barn.
A view over our land, to the north.
On friday I got the flu cough cough....grrrr
On sunday I was in better shape and off we went to our cabin on the lake Gagga. Down at the parking lot, all packed up and ready to go.
We returned home today from the cabin. I did forget my medication at the cabin and decided to go back by sled to pic it up. When approaching lake Gagga I recconed I would pass 500 kms or 310 miles, and when I closed in on the cabin the odo went to 500 kms, the break in period is over, WOT here I come LOL. At least I can run WOT if I want to, LOL
End trip.

End trip.
End odo.

The easter holidays.
The turbo sled did not see much action cause the easter holidays is a typical family holiday. The turbo did only get a few rounds in the back country at my fathers place.
Start odo.
The turbo at my in-laws, the day before we got dumped on.
I managed to get a short ride down to the shop and gas station together with my brother-in-law, he rides a '07 Apex RTX.
Today I went to pic up my turbo sled and the sled my cousin had rented from my local Yamaha dealer. I arranged the delivery cause he had to travel early this moring. He had a 2000 kilometers or 1200 miles drive ahead of him so he wanted to start out very early this morning.
End Trip.

I called my buddy this morning and asked him to get up from bed and take a look outside his window. Weather was perfect for a day of sledding so he got up in no time. He told me his was sled in bits, but I said we'll put her back together in no time. We went to his garage and finished off work on his '06 Attak MCX turbo.
Start odo.
When done wrenching on this sled we trailered it to my house. BTW - wrenching took 2 hours to finish off. The turbos outside my house, ready to take off.
We decided to ride to Børselv, a small town out on the eastern shores of the Porsanger fjord. To get there we rode the trail 15 towards the south to the Rochi valley where we took trail 14 to the east up into the eastern mountain plain. Then we headed to the north towards Børselv.
UP in the Rochi valley at lake Stuevann. About to enter the road through the Army and AirForce training fields of Halkkavarri. Pic is shot towards the east, the army road in the backgroung.
Pic shot to the south southwest.
Entering the mountain pass at Panserbu. Panserbu is an army observasion post for the bomb field. Just after passing this checkpoint we encountered a herd of reindeer grazing on the slopes of the mountain Gagga.
A pic shot in the back course down the valley Rochi.
Overlooking the upper part of the Rochi valley and mount Halkkavarri.
The turbo RX-1 in front of mount Gagga.
Heading east on the mountain plain towards the Luostejohka valley. Mount Luostgaissa and mount Suonjirgaissa in the distance.
We visited my friends tent in the forest in the Luostejohka valley.
Inside the tent, the cerosene oven.
My friend's relaxing on the "couch" after having lunch and some soft drinks, Coke that is.
After leaving the tent I had a mishap :-( I was riding behind my friend on a narrow trail thru the forest and forgot to pay attention to him beeing in front of me. When he stopped at an obsticle I was not alert and did drive into him from behind. Luckily speed was very low, about 10 MPH or 15 KMT, and I hit the break barely too late to stop in time.
Here's a reconstruction of the event, LOL.
I ran into his sled from behind.
I hit the sleigh hook.
Luckily only the hood got hit and damaged.
The next series of pics are shot after we headed to the north on the mountain plain, on our way towards Børselv. The pics do not need any comments, scenery is breathtaking. What do you think?
After riding for a while on the mountain plain, the trail ahead of us disappeared and all left of human activities was the trail markers, the powergrid and the reindeer fences. For half the distance to Børselv we were breaking trail across the mountain plain.
Starting the decent from the montain plain, heading down to the Porsanger fjord and the Arctic ocean.
Closing in on the fjord and the forest.
This is the northern part of the northernmost pine wood on the planet, the pine forest reaches above the 70 N latitude by some 25 miles or 40 kilometers. The vicinity of the town of Børselv in the distance.
In the town of Børselv we fueled up our sleds and bought some candy, chocklate and soft drinks. Time of arrival in Børselv was 3:30 PM. A few young lads came up to us and praised our Yamahas for beeing cool sleds, maybe because the fact that their father owned a RS Venture Young lads were curious if our sled were turboed and how much power they put out, you should seen their eyes when we said RX-1=285HP and Attak=300HP. I guess we made their day they do not encounter such sleds very often out there.
A few more pics shot on our way back the same trail we arrived at. Again no comments needed.
Mount Rastigaissa in the distance, 1069 meters or 3200 ft.
Mount Suonjirgaissa in the distance, 1046 meters or 3130 ft.
Sunset on the mountain plain. Breathtaking it was.
Twilights are upon us.
End trip.

A view from the hillside.
Then the climbing continues with a new broken in belt in place.
My sled on the mountain. LOL I did climb too yeeehhhaaaa what a rush of adrenaline, my fingers shook for minutes after a climb. I'm a flatlander mind you, but not my friend, he's a mountain guy and have climbed whatever there is to climb around here, even the impossible routes LOL

On todays ride two of my buddies joined in. First we rode into the western mountain plain, we returned, fueled up, and rode into the eastern mountain plain. Weather was just great with sunshine, some wind, and temps at about -6C to -10C or 21F to 14F.
Start odo.
The three turbos ready to take off. From the left, '06 Attak MCX310 turbo, '03 RX-1 MCX turbo and '03 RX-1 MCX turbo.
Our first stop on our way out west in between the mountains, was at lake Leavnnjajavri, mount Vuorji in the distance.
Next stop was at lake Husvann where we had lunch, chocklate and soft drinks.
We had a short stop just after we passed lake Øvre Stabbursdalsvann or Bajit Ravdosjavri in the Sami language. Mount Vuorji and the Gaissa mountain range in the far distance.
The trail ahead, on our way to lake Joatkkajavri.
At lake Joatkkajavri there is a "Fjellstue" lodging facility where you can rent a room, buy a meal, buy soft drinks, sometimes they have fuel. It's widely used during March, April and May by both sledders and cross contry skiers.
The turbos and my friends at Joatkkajavri Fjellstue.
On the return we decided to climb mount Vuorji. Altitude 1009 meters or 3030 ft. The climb starts at 500 meters or 1500 ft. Here's a couple of pics shot at the summit.
To the southwest.
To the north east.
To the east.
The turbos on the summit.
After visiting the summit of mount Vuorji we headed back towards Skoganvarre. Down in the valley at lake Vuollajavri we stopped by a few friends of ours. They had a campfire where they cooked dinner and made some coffee. We had a great time at the campfire. Thanks to all of you at the campfire for the hospitality, food and coffee served
Back at Skoganvarre and the trailers where we fueled up our sleds.
After a short break at the cars, we went out east to the Luostejohka valley to visit some other friends. They were staying in my riding buddys tent.
The turbos in Luostejohka at the camp. In addition to my friends tent there was another tent at the site. Three women and one guy were staying at the camp site.
The campfire. It was very nice meeting the girls and guy at the campfire. I even met my closest neighbour to my cabin on the lake, he has a cabin less than 100 meters or few hundred feet away from our cabin. They were cooking dinner on the open fire We were offered food to eat and wine to drink. Thank you all for your hospitality.
On our way home. Pic is shot just before sunset.
End trip.

Yet another great day of riding with my buddies.
Snowconditions are very good even at lower elevation. Temps are still below freeze even in sunshine midday. We may have these great conditions for another 2 weeks before temps starts to rise above freeze at daytime. Temps outside right now (00:15 AM) are -10C pr 14F.
The local snowmobile club which I'm a member of have bought a small groomer that can be towed behind a strong widetrack sled. They have actually started to groom the worst parts of the trail system, specially trails thru the forest regions. That is a great thing happening to our trail system. Thank you Magne Grøtte (the guy towing the groomer around today) for your effort in making our trails much more fun to ride, keep up the good work. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Please support your local snowmobile club!
They do a fantasic job in keeping our sport as fun as it is. Not only do they groom, they also put up signs, they put up trail markers, they cut down trees, they build bridges and prepare the trails for us to ride. A lot of work is done at summer and in the fall to make the trails better for winter use.

This morning started with light snow showers. Later in the day temps rose above freeze and it started to snow even more. In the afternoon it quit snowing. Temps outside are now just above freeze +2C or 35F.
Start odo.
My sled to the left and my buddy and his '07 Phazer FX MCX turbo to the right. At my house, ready to take off.
Up in the mountains we found this cornice
We rode up to my cabin on the lake Gagga where I had lunch while sitting on my sled
While we were at my cabin, my other riding buddy Mikkel arrived on his '03 RX-1 MCX turbo.
We joined forces and went out riding to lake Vuollajavri.
Due to poor visability because of the snow I did not stop to shoot more pics. After the break at lake Vuollajavri we returned back home to my friends garage.

Love the idea of turboing one of those things, so lightweight...
