Starter issues on vipers

With all the tuning knowledge that EVO has I would think that they solved the kickback issue but with few people actually riding their sleds yet this year there is not a lot of real world data to back it up. All the flash versions seem to have some issues (compared to the 08 Nytro) but the kickback is (to me at least) the worst by far of any of them.

I have seen the complete opposite flash reaction as Cannondale- I normally ride with 3 Vipers and a XF7000 all with the 2015 flash and all of them have kickbacks since the re-flash. My two 2014 Vipers were update flashed at the same dealer, the 2014 XF obviously was updated at a Cat dealer and the other Viper is a 2015 sled.

I'm with shadow.... the kick-back has to be the worst I have witnessed and heard.

I am one who had the sled work great, had the updated flash to 2015 and immediately had the kick-back, so did Shagman. We were able to richen our fuel controllers to compensate for it, but at that moment I believe Shagman's was hurt already. His kick-back broke the aluminum end off of the starter. It ground 8 more times starting before it failed.
 

I think that was aimed my way due to a previous post, but let me clarify I said the EVO flash will cure the failures caused by starter kickback... nothing more. Starters are failing for more than one reason so no one solution will fix them all.
Actually stingray it wasn't aimed at anybody at all. It was a general statement and not just pertaining to posts about it in this thread. Sorry if it seemed like it was directed at anyone in particular. Again the flash may very well be the cure but until proven......

No offense taken, I did make a post about the flash solving some of the starter issues that got carried away and just wanted to clarify.

Not sure what you mean by "proven". With my 2015 XTX - I had a bad kick back one time - I read about it and from that point on I stayed on the key a bit longer to be sure it started. You still get a rough start and the occasional cough (avoided kick-back). Real cold -20F I had a couple starting issues. Warm/hot would always start/run rough for the first few seconds. When I added the muffler and clutch work there was no change, it still started and ran the same.

I had the EVO 2.5 flash done for this season.

It starts normal every time (at least 60 or 70 starts at this point). I have not been able to test real cold yet, 20F is the coldest so far. Even at 20 though it starts/runs/idles better. I have had a LOT of warm/hot testing and it is hands down improved over what it was before when warmed up.

I have not read anywhere a claim that this flash fixes all issues or is a cure all for anything. I can say it fixed the start/idle issue on my sled. So if you have a good starter, the lack of damage from kick back should fix the starter explosion issue. It WILL NOT fix a bad starter. It will not "fix" any other mechanical problems. Based on the increased performance it probably won't "fix" gas mileage either - lol.

Looks a lot like mine did but I didn't loose that many teeth on the gear.

All I can say after this happened is to pull starter if you hear any grinding noise when starting. I think the nose breaks on the starter first and the rest is damage done from starting with nose broke.

I believe that is absolutely true.

There was a period of time when the starter sounded bad but wasn't grinding. I believe that is when that nose is coming apart.
