let me throw a curve ball into this discussion.
i'm running 06 apex bars and grips on an 03 rx1 mtn is it possible to make them work?? i spliced the wires together and have only marginal heat action.

I have been reading this site every night since i joined, I have a apex GT, 06 model. I hated the hand warmers, I purchased the upgrade, and hated them too, I read the post on using the 06 bars with the 07 harness, the results are unbelivable, I can't remember who did all the leg work, but thanks for having such a positve, well thought out web-site to get good info from.

I just got the updated bars from my dealer last night ( only way to get the harness) he told me DO NOT USE THE 06 bars with the 07 harness. He said he has replaced 2 ECU because people have done that. I told him that lots of people on this site have done it with no issues, and he was adament about not doing it........Has anyone had any problems.....?????

This ECU problem seems like a coincidence to me. Voltage draw is voltage draw. I have been running 100/80, non-bright white, bulbs in mine for 2 seasons. No ECU problems and no color distortion on the outer lens covers due to higher heat.

I suppose you could have ECU problems if you kept the bars cranked up on high all the time. I have mine set at 2 bars and when they get warm I turn them down to 1 bar. 900 miles on the machine with no problems at all with the ECU or the handwarmers since I did the fix.

NEW FINDING, at least for me. Now that I put the '06 OEM bars back on and have great heat using the replacement harness, parallel wiring, decided to play with the '06 replacement bars. Connected them in parallel directly to a 12v battery with battery charger connected. The bars now get so hot the rubber is starting to stink. What does that suggest? To me I believe it is something in the variable resistance controller. Doesn't explain why the '06 replacement harness, heats the OEM bars up to a point that going beyond 2 bars of heat would likely melt the rubber or burn out the element. Tried the '06 replacement bars in series, only luke warm. No surprise. Oh well.

IASLEDDER, Now test the resistance of each grip of the replacement bars. Bet it to be way above the 2.24 ohms. If you connected a 12 volt battery with a charger also attached to it, it stands to reason they will get hot even if resistance is too high. You are forcing alot of amperage thru those bars which the sled cant duplicate. That is why they get hot versus being on the sled.

King of the Lake---Sounds reasonable. I had figured that the resistance or wattage of the elements in the replacement bars is greater than that of the OEM bars. With the battery charger on it comes closer to representing the voltage out-put of the regulated machine's alternator. The ECU must not allow full regulated out-put to the bars even in the indicated max heat position being displayed.

Has anyone just modified the '06 sub-lead to create a '07 sublead? Maybe a little solder and shrink wrap?

I did, simply using these to hook the wires up as the new harness would. It worked fine in the shop and I'm sure would have done the trick, but I never put any miles on like that since my new bars/harness came before I had a chance to so I switched them out.

I did the same thing by using the clips. I had it done in no time flat and they have been working fine ever since. Amps = Volts/Resistance. You can't "force more amperage" than that through the bars. The reason it gets hotter hooked directly to the battery, is that the ECU on the sled pulses the voltage to the bars. When on high, longer pulses. When fewer bars, shorter pulses. Hooked direct there are no pulses so the duty cycle is 100% and it will get hotter than it ever would while on the sled.
