Well we got about 16" of snow this past weekend and my sled was put away for the season. Had a friend stop by on his sled , he was out riding with his buddy and I decided to join them. Snow was nice and we were buzzing along the trail on the side of a highway and BAM! I hit a folded over metal sign that caught my right ski head on. The sled went sideways and tossed me about 40' into a field. I brushed myself off and walked over to the sled on its side. Bars were resting on the gas cap. We set everything half back to normal and I was able to ride the short 5 miles back to the house. I knew I was hurt but didn't know how bad. Lot of pain on my left ribs and hip. Ended up in local ER , took a ride in an ambulance to a larger area hospital and was admitted into the ICU with a torn spleen. They let me go home tonight finally. Have to be super careful as it could begin to bleed again if I were to hit it or lift anything heavy. Tek Vest is in my future before I hop on again. Be safe guys , I have rode for many years and this happened. Oh by the way the surgeon told me the vest probably wouldn't have prevented this injury , it was the force of me hitting the ground that caused it. He was a fan of the vest though and said it for sure could help in other situations.

Sorry to hear about this. Glad you're ok. Hopefully you heal quickly. Sleds can be fixed. A good reminder for us all to be careful. No matter how experienced we are, sometimes we can't be prepared for the unexpected. Get well soon.Well we got about 16" of snow this past weekend and my sled was put away for the season. Unexpected exactly my friend. Funny thing is the other 2 guys rode over the same spot but I caught the post. It was hidden under the snow. When a local hospital does a CT scan and says you are being transported to a larger facility with intensive care stuff gets real very fast. Thank you for the warm wishes , I will rest up and get back to normal soon hopefully!Sorry to hear about this. Glad you're ok. Hopefully you heal quickly. Sleds can be fixed. I wear a vest, if nothing else, helps keep me warm. went in a ditch last year. still broke some ribs. had a cold at the same time. learned to not cough in a hurry. If I felt the need to clear my lungs, I had to brace my chest against a seat or something first. never missed a ride though.

ive been using a chest protector under the jacket for years now, we had a fatal accident at the mountain where a poor fella got the handle bar in the chest causing internal bleeding.

I feel your pain bud, ruptured my spleen 10 or so years ago snowboarding. Totally sucked. Put me out of sports and physical activity for about a year while it was susceptible to rerupture.

Thanks for posting up your experience. It goes to show that the unexpected can happen to anyone regardless of how many years you've logged in riding. I can't imagine what that must of felt like flying 40' through the air and then landing in a field. Like the old saying goes......"it's not the fall that hurts but the sudden stop".
Glad to hear that you were able to write about it instead of an even worse outcome and that you're on the mend.
I hope that you have a speedy recovery and that your sled fared better than you did.

Wow I can't imagine how scary it must have been when they said they had to fly you out! Guys sadly I have seen a few buddies go and it always the little things. They all looked like they could get right up and go riding again. No blood guts or gore. Do what you can to prevent injury and just enjoy the ride at whatever speed is safe. Remember if you are thinking how much fun the ride is the odds are very high the shits about to go down.

Better to be a little on edge and focussed, although some things like this can't be avoided.
