Build of a $600 SR Viper

Been a while since I have looked at the Viper or the site here, but it is time to get on this again. We have a little snow here not enough to ride yet, well if you care about your machine there isn't enough to ride yet that is. Anyways a little snow and the lakes are just starting to form some ice. We are still boating here and hopefully for a little while longer.

So on the list for the Viper
- dust the sucker off ( kind of got buried with dust from the table saw and I had no cover on it :dunno: )
- finish installing the wire harness ( I screwed myself here and did not take a pic of it while disassembling, if anyone has a good pic of the machine without the panels on it, that would really help with wire routing.)
- finish install of the belt drive ( it is getting there )
- port track and install the skid (as said we are going to find out how tough these COMPOSIT tracks are, I am going to port the piss out of it and see if it breaks, no sticks up here to worry about pocking threw a hole )
- fix the tunnel where the skids front pivot axle snapped and tore it up ( I have some 1/4" checker plate aluminum that I could shape and rivet in place, I will either use that or get the factory CAT tunnel backers for it )
- finish the headlight delete

I need to get back working on this beast soon, I will get some pics of the belt drive up when it is completed. Hopefully I don't miss reverse !!!

Here is how badly the poor thing got entombed this summer. My 2 summer students and I finished a lot of projects this summer and my little shop took a beating and is just getting cleaned up and organized, now that the building season is over.

You should have had those students work on the Viper. :winter:

Well, I have done a little work to the machine to date. I am Happy!!! to say it is now supporting it's own weight. The rear suspension, track and belt drive is all in place and looking good. I still have a good # of things to get done before I can start this thing. wiring needs to be run and supported all plumbing (cooling and oil), throttle bodies, air box and all plastics also needs to be installed, both clutches need going threw and reinstalled. Still a big list but definitely getting shorter....

There has been a change in my thinking on porting of the track. Instead of porting it, it is going to be studded. There is a cross country race in the spring here from Iqaluit to Kimmirut and back to Iqaluit that I want to run this machine in. The race is all cross country with a bunch of river running and all of it on un-groomed trails, so studding the track is going to be much better than a ported track. But I am still on the quest to get rid of all of the unnecessary "creature comfort" weight.

OH! P.S. pics of the progress will be up tomorrow.

Pics don't lie. My shop is still dirty but workable, sled supporting it's own weight, still need to do a bunch more work.

this is how I think I want the sled. No gauges, no dash just bare bones. I have some sheet black plastic that i could possibly shape into a cover for under the wind shield to hide everything, but???

You need the gauge, seeing low oil, high temp, etc I couldn't live without that peace of mind. I also don't think your hand warmers will work, maybe some other stuff as well with the gauge unplugged.

Ok, I got to ask. What is the benefit of having a belt Vs the stock chain case? Better gear ratio? More reliable? I have seen people do this before, and am just wondering if there is any improvement or not over stock.

I was thinking about the safety the gauge cluster has but what I originally thought was to use 2 autometer gauges 1 for pil pressure 1 for water temp and put them in the gauge pods there. But in all reality there was no benefit to doing that so my new thought is mount the factory gauge under the wind screen (shown in the pic). I did a little more work and I also just ordered up a new starter, belt, RSI gel grip wrap, bar warmers, and hand guards.

I went with it becaus

I went with it because it cleanly eliminates reverse and it is also a lot lighter. Is there a benefit, probably not. I read about a turbo'd machine putting 600hp threw it though, so that tells me it is plenty strong.

Nice work!

no more stickers to scratch up and look ratty

throttle block ala vk540, way smaller and cleaner than the original. still have to figure throttle over ride whether it is normally open or normally closed hopefully i can just disconnect the wires and it will run if not i will have to make a small jumper wire still need to cap where the old kill switch was
