Clutch observation and issue. Calling clutch experts here.

Installed Cat yellow spring at 9/3. Nice feel. Your going to think I'm crazy but adjusting deflection it was great came right up to the top of secondary. I kept bringing it up until I had just one roller SLIGHTLY OFF helix. Other two tight on. And here is where it's gets very interesting. With the Dalton b/o the belt would not come up to top of secondary. It was like I couldn't get the deflection right and only ever had one roller touching. LOL. Total opposite of what everyone thinks and clutch book says. Call me nuts but it's a true story. And yes I agree not under load. So it does not mean much. But it came up better with a baby #*$&@ soft secondary spring. This with straight 38. . I know I'm going to get laughed at.

When you say soft are you speaking of the yellow cat spring?

Ok I just double checked the specs on the stock winder secondary spring and for some reason I thought it was 32kg but it actually 43kg. So yes it is stiffer when fully compressed. I know the torsion is a lot more on the stock spring than the yellow.

The cat yellow is 15mm longer so at installed height it should be stiffer in compression @ installed height with less twisting force.

The Cat yellow is shorter then the Dalton b/o for sure. Not a lot but it's shorter. I went by feel and 2/0 was to much IMO. Thars why I went 9/3. Betting it's perfect for my set up

I went and visited Gagne Lassard today, Of Gagne Lassard Yamaha in Coaticook Quebec ,he of the world record holding top speed snowmobile. I talked to him about the roller secondary in the Sidewinder and his thoughts on the spring/helix combos that Yamaha has given us and what he runs in his sleds. I bought his adjustable helix and ramps. He also told me how he sets up his secondary clutches. I will hopefully testing his combo and theories tomorrow. Let me tell you, it is far different than what is being discussed here.

Good glad it’s working out!
After looking at the specs on the stock spring it appears to me the torsion value is crazy stiff for such a low helix angle. Low angle helixes already have to twist the spring a lot more than higher angles to reach full shift it just seems like a very high torsion spring to me.

If the clutches aren’t running hot and your happy with the upshift/backshift I’d say go with it.

Wich combo did you bought? Cam *45 St2 primary weight, whit big roller?

I bet the helix is way more angle then stock. And actually going on s limb the secondary spring is not that stiff? Looking forward to real world testing

45-41 running Heelclicker weights. I will have to pull some weight out of the primary I am currently using

Correct. 45-41, stock spring, heelclicker weights with underdetermined weight just yet, I have to do some testing. One thing he spoke of was the LENTH of the stock 35 degree ramp

Don't want to interrupt the conversation, but what would be a concern for clutch temps? Asking because I'm definitely running hotter with TP orange secondary spring (wrapped at 2-3.) I can put my hand on them, but only for like 20 sec.
Jon, glad your having some success. After how you had it running last season, surprised you even messed with it. Lol

To much belt clamping force is overheating your clutches. You need either less spring force or more helix angle. Unwrapping the spring helps but can only do so much. Before I suggested going to a 38 helix with the TP orange, but jonlafon is suggesting even more helix may be better with that large of a spring.
