Had the reflash done on my 16 turbo viper 1/4/19 and rode sled last weekend. Much improved warm/hot starts than before.
All but one cold start on the first try, the one that took 2 tries was about 10 deg F. It did start on the 1st try but stalled after a second.
Gas mileage was improved as well.

hello i have a cat 7000 and got my update done . before always took 2 times to start and idle surged ,now starts 1st try 5 degrees f today and surging idle fixed starts 1st time on hot soak , just taught i would post about my cat , i cant find much about the cat on there site , love this site i get all the info i need thanks everyone

My results from flash. When cold in morning this weekend in Michigan starts right away one try. When it got warm in afternoon (39 deg) it cranked longer before firing. Sometimes it would stumble and I would have to start again like before. I also had some problems when trying to start hot where it would crank, fire for split second, crank, fire for split second ect.. I never let off key. If I tried to start again right away it would do same. If I waited a minute before trying again it would fire as normal? It never did this previously but we were riding in pretty warm temps. (Is this the hot start issue Ive heard about?). Can’t say if it was faster or crisper due to big venom clutch kit installed at same time as flash but either way I like how responsive it is now.
Update to this post: Both vipers performed flawlessly this weekend. Started first try cold (below zero temps in morning) and when hot from long lake runs. Warmest outside it got was 8f. No weird hot start issue, idle was 1500 and steady. So not sure if outside temps play a big role in performance of latest flash but I was very happy!

Just got home from Hurley and there is some good and some bad with this flash. First temps were from highs of 8 degrees and lows of -5f, and morning starts were not impressive at all. Cranks very slow and have to crank for long time before it starts and still dies after it fires then it cranks faster and starts, but if this saves the starter so be it. Hot starts are excellent. Idling is much improved and sled does feel more snappy, but I don’t know if that’s from the flash or if its the smaller rollers and 46/40 helix that I installed. 2 other vipers in our group (14 and a 15) that cold started better than mine but warm starts were better on mine

Couple of mornings ago probably -28 Celsius or so went to start my sled and something interesting happened...it turned over slowly and seemed like it was about to backfire (which it would have done before this flash) when I let off the key but the starter kept turning and prevented a big backfire and it just popped a little and fired right up on next crank...think battery was a little low because of the cold. My first two start since the new flash.

If you let off the key and it kept cranking I'd replace the starter relay. It's impossible for the flash to keep the starter engaged.

I have the XF 7000. Very similar to your Crosstrek. Except for clutch/drive belt and body panels, the 7000 is identical to the Viper and all the info is applicable to our sleds.oh yeah 16 crosstreck 7000

It was just a split second...maybe more in my head but seemed like it prevented it from backfireing.

So far hot starts have been good with -10 to +10 F temperatures. Cold start the first morning at -12 F it rolled slow and took a few attempts. Second morning with the same -12 F temperature I gave it quick, maybe 1/8 flip on the throttle when I first turned the key and it fired almost immediately.

Well it was around -33 this morning up in northern MN and my sled started the first try. It was parked inside of a trailer but still very happy with the new flash. ( did not ride today to cold ) Sled ran great all week. Put around 550 miles this week and no problems except for the damn cold weather.
-8-10f all weekend sled ran and started perfectly. I am happy.

It’s a voltage issue to ecu. Yamaha knows this. That is why Back in day of carbs Yamaha had the best hand warmers in existence and then with fi did everything possible to get clean maximum voltage to the ecu even resorting to limiting handwarmer voltage to do it. These cats the starter gets first priority. It doesn’t work unless everything else is perfect. That’s the variability.
I agree with Steve. 100%.
I don’t think the latest flash is to blame. I bet, and I can’t prove it, but I bet that 99.9% of the starting variables have to do with the items below.
Is your battery 100% charged and operating at its max CCA?
Is all the wiring between your battery and starter 100% corrosion free and fastened down per specs, and smothered with di-electric grease?
Is your fuel fresh and free of water?
Are your plugs good to go?
Is your starter relay wet and barely functioning, or bone dry and working the way it should?
Did the dealer that flashed your sled download the updated flash correctly or did they use a dial up internet service that can barely check the news, and that flash update they have on their half dead 1998 Dell laptop is putting a partially loaded flash program in your ECU? (I’m no TI guy but I’ve had programs say they were ‘loaded,’ and they were not. Switch to a better internet source, reload the program and viola! The program works.... purely a hunch, but something to think about).
So many variables. Yamaha / Cat needs to fix the flash issue, but let’s face it, they probably won’t ever do it the right way, they’ll just keep sending us ‘updates’ until they can’t be held liable anymore.
I’m going to get the new flash when I get home, and I will continue to check my plugs, wire connections, starter relay, and battery on a regular basis. I keep my battery 100% which seems to make the most difference concerning consistent, predictable cold starts, and hot starts.

Finally got a chance to ride my new to me viper with 24000kms new flash was installed few weeks ago from the original 14 flash. First start up since unloading it off the truck started on first trying and idled nice and smooth just as I remembered my nytro running. Went for a quick 15 20min ride. This thing pulls hard and was nice and smooth no issues at all. Got back and left idle in my drive way a little long as I don’t like shutting down right away after a hard ride. Temp got up to 94 C. Pulled it into the garage shut it down. I let it stand for about 1 min. Cranked to start it again and it fired right up just like it should and how I would expect it to. First ride and very happy with the sled and the flash seems great. I have no seat time on it from how it was before, but the previous owner said he always needed to give it a little throttle on trying to start it. He had three other vipers and this one was the only one with that issue. I did not have that problem with this flash. Idle was also inconsistent before. Now it’s nice and smooth.
