Not sure what flash my 14 has in it. I left it in the trailer all week when we had crazy cold temps. Went out Saturday when it was around 15 turned the key and instantly started. I’ve yet to have any cold starting problems even when 10 below. Only issue was the old relays that I replaced.

Yea well mine USED to start like that.

That’s why I’m not getting the update. Sled runs flawless except this weekend it would occasionally die off idle like someone turned the key off. Started right back up.

As far as I'm concerned there is absolutely nothing good about this flash update. I also find it hard to believe that people are truly feeling a more responsive engine...... At the start of every season I always think my sleds are more responsive the first few trips out. I also had a chance to run against a couple sleds that I lined up against last season and there was no noticeable change in my Viper's performance with this update.

I SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAD THIS SO CALLED "UPDATE" DONE AND DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

I had planned to do the this latest update, sure glad I never. Mine runs flawless, no issues warm or cold. Idles at 1550 +/-20. Original 2014 flash.

I base the performance increase on my buddies stock 7000 and the fact with 16 flash when I had 87 oct ign selected and switched to 93 I could feel the difference. So much so that I always kept it on 93. With this flash I now feel no difference in the switch. Timing is already optimized.

Speaking of I was playing with tune and adding 6% to the low end gave me about 100rpm more on cold start.

I wonder why that would be. I will say I have a 16 and the new flash completely changed my sled for the better. instant starts all day where as before it would take 3-4 attempts to get it started and revs up faster and cleaner. No more off idle hesitation. This is how the sled should have ran from day 1

The dealer told me that the 2014 (and I think 2015s?) originally started well in the cold, but would backfire sometimes. The 2016s (and the 2016 flash) tried to correct the backfire by stopping the fuel after 5 seconds of cranking. I definitely noticed this 5 second thing when trying to cold start my 2016 MTX 141. He said that was why the 2016s were the worst for starting in the cold. This latest 2018 flash removes the 5 seconds of cranking fuel cutoff, so will definitely help the 2016s and those who had 2016 flash start in the cold. Am not sure how newest flash deals with backfires.
I haven't got the latest flash yet, but am convinced it has got to be better than the way it currently starts on very cold mornings.

I never did the 2016 flash on my 15 Viper because I never had backfires and it always started in the cold. In fact I rode in Canada for several day and temps stayed below -20 f with one morning at -38 f. Mine needed a booster only on the -38 day but started every morning. The only reason I did the update flash is because it would take a few start attempts at times when warm.

The 2018 flash seems to allow the engine to rotate at least one or more revolutions before firing so maybe the thinking is that once the engine is rotating and the initial voltage draw stabilizes for the electronics it's shouldn't kickback.

I think I'll hold off on updating to the latest flash. I haven't been able to take my 2018 out for a good run yet to test warm starts, but it seems to cold start no problem. Runs at 1800rpm until it gets to ~30c for the temp, then it drops to 1500-1550RPM. Not sure which flash or date that matches, but the sled was purchased late 2017.

First weekend with the new flash update. I have a 2014 and 2015 LTX. Yamaha still has not figured this out. Clearly they don’t have a solution. They are trying to get it to the point to not destroy the starter but the result is a crappy starting process. Both of my sleds have different results.

2014
My 2014 has had two blown starters. This new flash update now results in warm/hot starting issues. After sled has been running hot and I stop for gas or on trail it proceeds to turn over many times and not catch. This is random sometimes it starts and next time it doesn’t. It does seem to start better cold with one long crank. Overall, the starting of this sled sucks.

201
The new flash seems to be an improvement. Starts better cold and no hot start issues.
