When I replaced my bearing in the pto shaft I coated the splines and the inside of the shaft with Lucas red&tacky grease.
It actually made it a touch quieter simply that you didn't have 'steel on steel' rattling away. Just to be clear, the noise didn't go away but the sound didn't have that metallic clatter as bad.
There is a seal on this assembly that will prevent that stuff from getting into the engine. The earlier comment about oil getting in there I don't think is accurate because of that seal. If oil did get in there it would be minimal at best.
