Tune differences

Stock muffler tunes usually are harder in fuel. I do have a slightly used 3 in Super Quiet if any one is interested .

Lot’s of good advice given already.
As gas prices increase the tunes made for 87 octane sound really good, whether from TD or Hurricane.
Problem is, if you try a buddies 270 stock muffler tune, you’ll be blown away and want the bigger tune. Boost is Addictive!!!

The Max Spool or Quick Spool tunes are still mild mannered, until you don’t want them to be.

Dave sent out and offer to talk with you! Take the plunge and give him a call after you’ve done your research!

Yeah I took Dave's offer up for conversations and spent a good 30-45 mins talking with him and going through some of the history of how he got to his tunes. The destructive testing on the Dyno to find the engines weak point, was quite enlightening.

He recommended going straight to the super spool tunes and stock muffler, and I was all set to do that.

I have been looking at the long thread of powerfully but quiet mufflers. Tempting to get hurricanes 2.5" as it seems like 3" mufflers have drone.

^^^ what @STAIN said for sure.

Also having gone through 3 motors with a tuner, find one that has a good history, and stick with all products they recommend, don't mix or match. Also don't get caught up in HP numbers, most advertise in a 100% perfect conditions you may get 280hp but in real world if they have the knock sensitivity working you may only be getting 240hp but splash some high octane in it and your back to 270. Just know that going into it.

IMO, there are only 2 choices. TD and Hurricane. Both have solid reputations. I have had nothing but a great experience with Max Spool 16 on my Sidewinder.

If I bought another 998, I'd try Hurricane on that sled. I'd like to support both companies because they both work hard to make our sleds awesome.

Stock muffler tunes are my favorite to be honest. This is my 3rd winter running tuned sidewinders. Ive ran a few different 2.5” mufflers and a 3” muffler. They all sound great and are fun…….at times. Sometimes you just want some quiet and there is no muffler quiet as stock, simple as that. Some mod mufflers are close and may sound similar but go ahead and swap them back to back and you will see there is more difference to your ear then you thought. My last few rides have been on stock muffler tunes and I am happy. Having both bundles for stock and performance mufflers I am able to compare and dont see a huge difference between equally rated tunes, they turn about the same weight and go the same speed in my experience. The stock mufflers generate a little more underhood heat but nothing dangerous or alarming, far less than the underhood heat you get from a header. Huge power levels require a muffler no doubt and there is a huge benefit to it in that application. If you want simple power, grab a stock muffler tune from hurricane or td and enjoy your winter.

There is no doubt that the SM tune rock and easier on the wallet. 240SS SM from Hurricane will really freak you out the first time out.... lol. They are that good. Try it... If you want more, then you can mix it up... 270 on the trail is just awesome...

I see some stock muffler tunes go to 270 (+BOV/CAI) and some seem to hover around the 240/250 with just weights. What in your opinion since you can switch back and forth is the best combination of 'quiet power'. Not looking to win any lake races, just corner to corner fun and some fast cruising with reasonable mileage. I am thinking 240 tune or equiv, closed loop, maybe BOV, weights, stock muffler. Not enough season for me to put a ton of money into it and I got most of that itch scratched when we were fielding a V-drive boat.

I think the Hurricane 240ss stock muffler tune is very impressive. Weight change and a MAP sensor is all that is needed. Of course then you eventually need to cut your throttle body clamp barrels to avoid any boost leaks.
I agree with justinator. If trail riding is your thing, then the stock muffler tunes are hard to beat for reliability, quietness, and power.
The "quiet" mufflers that are actually quiet, don't make any power.

The wrenching I don't mind at all. Its just downtime during the short season since my buddy talked me into selling him my attak I don't have a backup unless I want to ride his 02 grand touring... not. Quiet, reliable, gas and go. Happy with everything else. Thanks for the feedback.

X2.. I run the same tune, but I changed my gearing to 24/50, I don’t see high top speeds but the corner to corner acceleration is what I’m after.. couldn’t be happier with the 240ss tune.

What track/studs are you running.
