Warning, -16 late build Viper turbo breakdowns, bad rods.

Here is my perspective. Not going to make everyone happy but too F#$kn bad. I paid 21K for this sled. If it blows up due to the MPI trail turbo and Yamaha decides not to do anything ( not really worried about that as my dealer has been fantastic and said "drive the #*$&@ out of it and we will deal with it later") then I will put in Rods, studs and make it 245+ horsepower. I know this is not a popular view here where many say: I paid and it should be perfect. That why I bought a Yamaha. Well if you kept it stock it would run forever. If it doesn't you have two choices: snivel and whine and not drive it or fix it and use it. I choose to ride as opposed to complaining and jumping on the internet and bitching about how I have been screwed over.

It amazes me every day how people buy a car/truck/SUV and are willing to accept a 30%+ loss just for being the first fool to pay for it and drive it off the lot, but when they buy a toy (quad, jet ski, sled etc) they get pissed when its not perfect.
I am not rich by any stretch but I am comfortable and one thing I learned early on is that "It's only money, you can make more". I have yet to meet the person who got into the sport to save money. Would it suck? ABSOLUTELY, however would it stop me from doing what I can to enjoy my purchase? NO

A wise friend said to me long ago about divorce: "Add it up, cut in half, cut the cheque and save some hair" His point was you are going to have to pay either way so do it and move on and you may still be attractive enough to find another pension partner. ;)
Your the man........

Hey Michael Geil, how close are you to Springville NY. ?
I have very good friends that we ride with that live just a few miles west of there. I would guess you are pretty close.
They come over to the UP and ride with us.

Well as stated before I am one of the "test sleds". I picked mine up in mid November and had to inform the dealer about the EABC issues and had already disconnected it. I went to Mesa on thanksgiving and ride it hard. I have since put 600 miles on it without missing a beat. Many pulls at 4 on boost gauge for short periods, I am a little

It is still running well but in all honesty I am glad they realize there is an issue and are dealing with it. However it won't stop me from driving it.
Ride it like you stole it.......

Right but wouldnt a 16.5 with good rods be preferable over old motor? To me it would because of starter gear improvement alone.
I'm hoping for a 16.5 with new rods. No word yet from my dealer. Pls update if anyone hears anything all I'll do the same

We have been doing alot of testing with this new engine in the yxz1000r platform. After upgrading the rods and installing head studs, the engine seems strong over 300hp. This engine still has the stock pistons in it. There are many little changes inside the new engine but the rods seem to be the inly week spot

So how about max power on stock engine? I see a statement from you saying 190 kit is ok and with the 230hp kit its recommended to change rods. Mcx confirmed in nov/des that even the 190kit (viper) did not last their stresstest.

Whats your oppinion at this time?

I'm with you on this one! Glad yamaha is doing something for you Michael! But regardless if our sleds are boosted or not, yamaha should replace all late 2016 viper engines or at very least the rods. I only have 20km on my sled! Finally getting colder Temps and more snow this weekend!

Also sent an email to my dealer regarding the engine problems and what yamaha is going to do. Waiting to hear back.

my dealer did say a recal could be coming out and they have paperwork on the issue, i doubt they would replace the rods, for one i dont want my dealer dissasembling my brand new engine to install rods- no way, its probably more cost effective for them to replace the engines, i hope.
