Aftermarket clutch weight testing from this weekend

No, clutching does not affect warranty. I live just south of Manitowoc off of Hwy 42

Non studded on hard pack grass....it's very close in traction

Agreed, very close. The 8DN belt may grab a touch better but I am doing everything with the stock 8JP and having good results thus far...cool clutches, pull like a mother F and only a little belt dust with the miles that are on the sled. My sled was used in the video to test the EVP stage programs in Minnesota. Hardly any belt dust with 473 miles on the clock.

The reason I am talking so highly of Thunder Products is the 50 foot difference in length with the testing stripes in my yard, the "HOLY $HIT" I was saying when I was trying to avoid trees on my shutdown and the way the clutches were just luke warm. I tell it like it is and won't sugarcoat anything. Remember, I don't get paid for doing this......I do it because I love the sport, love the SW and do it for all of you here on TY. If these weights were Joe Schmoe weights....I would be talking very highly of them.

Thanks VX1R, jonlafon1 and murdered
Thanks for reply but I have always found when studded , rpms will be lower compared to unstudded. Just my 2 cents.

On snow or ice....yes

grass i haven't seen any difference

meant no disrespect and not knowing you (yet) I consider it a reasonable question....

might want to test some daltons? or better yet...some heelclicker 2 speeds ....never had a better setup on a yamaha....for sure destroyed my heavy hitter setups...

As everyone or anyone that has met me...I'm someone who will talk and help everyone out there....so no disrespect was taken. You asked a question and guess with the Thunder Products banner...I can see how questions will be asked.

I'm a clutching guru and dig trying to get the most out of my sleds. This is why I want more people to bring their setups to test or even run the setups I have.

Is there better out there? I bet there is and I hope so....gives me another reason to get other setups better :)

I'm not too far from you, other side of lake Winnebago. I have a cold air intake on and OSP weights in, just waiting on my ECM to get here from EVO. They received it Tuesday so maybe today, but would like to do some running. Trying to find some grass strip a 1000' long is tuff. I've been following your clutching here. The OSP weights are using the same stock profile and would really like to see a more aggressive startup like my priceless/osp weights in my 16 cat. That rips out of the gate and pulls like diesel train. I'm thinking my sidewinder at 15psi is going to be giving my cat at 22psi a run for it's money. I ran it in a 500' grass drag here with 0 miles on it and it feels like a 200hp sled stock but lacks the off the line punch.

Awesome!

Need to get all of us together sometime ;)!

I have a quick story to tell you about my buddy Turk...

The year was 2006 Manitoba ride....Turk and I had the same sled, 2006 Attak. Coldest ride I have ever been on. Sleds wouldn't start so we had to pull them into an enclosed trailer to warm them up a little, just so we could have the whole group ride with us.

Good 'ol Turk comes riding in with his back pack. Comes into the breakfast nook and has a complete set of clutches torn apart on the table. WTF? Sat next to him and asked what he was going to change. He said "Just doesn't have the right feel to it...eh?" He asked what I was running and I told him. Later that day we were on a lake next to each other and both hit it. After we stopped at this little place to eat, he couldn't believe I walked him as he said his clutching was spot on for rpm's. We swapped sleds and couldn't believe how my clutching pulled like crazy. He asked where I thought of that setup.... I said "You... Turk ol buddy". We talked and talked and then Turk said, "no, you figured this one on your own and I repect that... There will always be a winner and a loser...but it's what you learn by losing that makes us get better."

I gained respect that day and Turk gained my respect :)

I miss the big lug....but so glad I got to spend time with him.

when is get together? Id be there want to see one in action before snow is here. Or what about a early season ice run. We would need some older temps for that one

Used to always go testing on Rib Lake in central Wisconsin....seemed like the only lake to freeze by the 1st weekend in December. Do a search for Rib Lake and you will see some of the mph we were getting out of sleds back then.

I will see what I can come up with for a little clutching/test get together ;)!

Ya...great guy...great source...about the only guy Ive ever heard of who would take a box of parts and some clutches out to a lake and spend an afternoon "playing"

RIP Turk..

Good story. People wonder why I love snowmobiling---that's it in a nut shell.
I think one thing that some people forget when clutching a sled is there is a compromise for everything. A good lake set up may not be good for the trail and vice versa. It is usually a compromise between the two. A word I use a lot with a buddy of mine when talking snowmobile clutching is "drive" How does the sled "drive"? We have all seen sleds that run the right RPM all day but go nowhere, no drive. I have ridden identical sleds that are side by side on the lake but when trail ridden feel totally different from each other due to clutch set up. They drive different. Also how does the particular rider like to have his sled feel?
A local sled shop here used to put huge secondary springs in everybody Cats. People thought there sleds were rockets. I said " yeah, it is a rocket for 150 feet and then lays down!"
Also nothing is free. Parts or time. If I had all the money back for the clutch parts I have that don't work, or should I say don't work for me, I would be close to a new Sidewinder. Test, Test, test and test some more---those are the people that are fast.
I love sites like this to bounce ideas off people without all the drama of other places.
Keep up the good work

Agreeded jaflo,i have the 17 LTX-LE and when we started grass dragging it 3 wks ago,was all stock zero miles, numb out of the hole stock spring,no studs than, but what I had done was remove the rear block, and suck down the limiter straps past there shortest point by 2 inches, and drop front shocks by 3" hoping it would transfer like sleds of old we used to race, well it don't like tight straps at all,but that is something we just found out last weekend, and than I had slides out, extra wheels added two 8" rear idlers in,and studded 192 trail carbides, exspecting it to launch like a rooster, and an heelclicker all black primary spring, which engaged at 3300,did it launch, yup, but fell back to earth way to quick,it still could not transfer,WTF i said, losen straps out,all the way,wow now wheelie monster. So in 550 feet mine ran 93 mph and on gps same speed 93 so i am ok with the feeling of its top speed will be very good,it already feels faster than my 13 procross with TD v-19 tune on map 1,210hp mode. I can not log onto HCS so i cant see your cold air kit vid,but i remember when i had my procross there were guys making them up like yours cheap, and they worked too. I to am watching the clutching and muffler for this beast,so far FPP has a nice aggressive ramp made up that looks like it may work good to,and a fuel adder box like the hauck one i had once with his complete exhaust for apex,so that fueller with pipe may work good and no need to do a flash, unless you want north of 250 hp lol.

I wish i had met him,we talked a bunch of times,he always liked the heelclicker weights, the old style lol,and he could make them work great,i miss his knowledge and spark he brought to our forums, and you my friend are doing a great job of picking up the ball and running full steam ahead lol,i am starting to get old enough that i don't like messing with clutching as much as i once did, been 45 plus years of screwing with clutching, carbs, motors, skids well you get the idea,i will let you young fellars do all the work, and keep peeking to see how you are doing, and mix and match what you guys have on the plate. So thanks to all the hard working young people out there now to make our snow buggies go even faster....LOL.

It's good to see the kids getting along for the holidays. There's hope in the world after all..... Now wipe your eyes with a kleenex & get back to testing!
