I just did mine and removed 4mm and have 2mm washer in and offset measures exactly 57.8. I figure close enough to 58mm. I hope it now keeps heat down in secondary! We shall see!

4mm is too much, the movable will move further than that, so be sure that your shims behind the shaft are smaller diameter than the secondary shaft, grind them down if you have to, if not smaller than the secondary shaft, your shims will prevent the movable from reaching full shift or push the clutch outward and negate setting the proper offset in the first place if you have it set up to float, if non floating it will bind and blow the belt at high speed.

Taking up to 2mm from the clutch is fine, beyond that you risk going too far. The movable will ride beyond the shaft taking more than 2mm when using 8JP belt lengths.

Again, it does not hurt to remove all shims and even the circlip when using the winder secondary to set the offset. I have not machined a secondary on a winder yet, but I make sure the PTO shaft hasn't moved. More often then not, if the secondary needs machined after removing shims and circlip, the PTO shaft has moved quite a bit.

Not sure why you couldn't remove the circlip and put a circlip in the bearing housing instead like Cat does

You don't need a circlip at all, I've set many up without shims and circlips on the shaft. The shaft or bearing will not move. It's all pressed together tight and can't move.
