Cold Air Intake Temperature Reading

The important thing to look for is how much over ambient temps is the intake temp running on an average.

Check it with a WAI, then check it with the Stock airbox. I've seen the stock airbox at 10F over ambient. WAI system is 20-30 over ambient, and the harder you are push it, the higher the temps go yet with WAI. Also the higher the ambient temp goes, it compounds even higher with the WAI system over the stock airbox.

It gets to a point that on a warm day say 30-35F on a WAI system, the intake temps generally run up there at 60-70F just cruising, and if you get into the throttle even the slightest you will be at 80-90F on the big tunes, this is where the stock airbox will help the most dropping intake temps. You will se it 20-30F cooler on warmer days vs the WAI.

What I have seen is power falls of drastically up over 90-100F. Test it for yourself. You will see the CAI is not actually CAI.

Like I've said before, the WAI will need a bit more clutch weight and it makes more boost, but it also makes more heat, and draws hotter underhood air as well as robbing air that could be going to the clutches and keeping the belt on it. IMO you can click up one tune and get better power than the WAI provides. So honestly, what good is the CAI until you are maxed out on tunes? And at that point, you are going to me more concerned with octane and deto than the extra 5HP and .5lbs of boost is going to do for you and the belt you are about to blow anyway.
yes I see the same results as what you speak off , I can not make 2 back to back wot without losing power on my second pass as my iat climbs fast with a stock intercooler , I have now went with a bigger 3 inch intercooler with better results then stock , the bigger intercooler has decreased temp by 20 degrees from crusing speeds to hard wot . example .stock trail riding on a 270 tune 38-40 degree on a 22degree day , then stab the throttle to watch iat rise to 55-60 quickly ,
3 inch intercooler same tune same outside air temp would see 19-20 degrees trail riding . stab the throttle to watch temp rise to 38-40
 

Ok, probably not good then...Ive seen all the ebay kits and anything using a k&n will not suck cold air.

Is this it below? My original design does better then this one.

That is the first thing I thought of when I read KOLENKO CAI, his name is Anthony Kolenko and I see him post quite a bit on the SW/T-Cat facebook pages. He is from the main state of Michigan I do recall. Not sure if he posts on here or not?

Here is my initial (temp) CAI-RAM to reduce sucking air from under hood. I have a complete redesign in the work and will be drawing air from an entirely different location, which will open up venting to the clutches from the front. Only cost me 3$ and should help I hope.
 
UPDATE ON AIR INTAKE TEMPS: Okay, after 2 days of trail riding at 5 degrees on Saturday and 15 on Sunday , coldest intake temp was 28 degrees hottest was 42. Riding rail road beds at 50 to 80mph constant to in and out of tight trails in woods with no breaking of trails. Monday, testing clutching setups on river, 20 degree temps back to back to back runs intake temp 38 degrees! All WOT runs. Stopped to change clutch setup, maybe 10 to 15 min, start sled intake temp at 64 degrees. Took off and temps went back down to 34 degrees. Yes, all in fahrenheit not celsius lol. Told Mr. Knapp I would report back here and for what its worth these are my results from 3 days of riding with my CAI. Going back to river for more clutching this afternoon and will check if results are the same. 20 degrees today and sunny!

I like it..nothing better then using everyday stuff for mods!

Id like to see more feedback on AFRs from "out of the hood" CAI guys, as I would like to simply make mine go out of the hood for all cold air consistently.

Is that off your phone or the dash? I noticed when testing with my buddy that his gauge reads way low compared to the data logging. Intake temps rise quickly and fast when running WFO on big tunes. Its nothing to see 90-100F temps at the end of just one run on a 20F day. Judging by your temps here I'd guess your getting them from the factory gauge because those are super low for a big tuned machine.

Or, maybe you are just running a small tune?

How much did the 3"inter cooler cost?

As usual, you are 100 percent right Mr. Knapp. Temps from gauge and I am only tuned for 260 hp at this time. And to let you know yesterday at 20 degrees and some long WOT runs temp bumped up to 68! Just wish I could do apples to apples and had another winder with stock setup for comparison of temps.
 
Also, RockerDan, Chaleurphantoms, intake is the same intake I am running. It is a k&n xtreme filter.
 
Use stock airbox with a less restrictive filter or none at all and sealed with a big vent right out the sidepanel. As a test just remove sidepanel and filter and run it. You will have no doubt as to the benefit.
 
Does the under the hood venting supply cold air to intake? If so and you had a CAI why couldn't you run a large radiator hose from the hood duct down to the top of the clutches to help keep them cool?

Maybe if you had a fan to pull the air down. It's just not going to settle down through on it's own. Chances are the hose would heat up from the engine heat and minimize the effectiveness.
 
The back of the driven clutch blows air out between the belt guard and gas tank against the inside of your left knee. I opened up my panel some more and using the clutch to blow the air out.
Let's a lot more air out.
