I look at it like this, If it was possible to get the full flow and be super quiet than everyone would have made a muffler option like that. I dont think their is anyway around getting some sound and highest flow at the same time. My buddys sled was on a track dyno and it was quite surprising what the pefi muffler gave up for hp vs the 2.5" dd tech 2 muffler. Now the dd muffler is on the opposite end of the spectrum being a louder high flow muffler but results were surprising none the less. I still think its a good option for alot of people though as like you described.....thats what a sidewinder should leave the factory sounding like.Interesting information justinator. I was wondering myself about the actual flow of the PEFI Trail muffler as it weighs close to stock. They must have some extra baffles that restrict the airflow yet still keep it quiet. Thanks for posting your info. Lots of good info here on TY.

Interesting as I just ordered a hurricane 240 ss with the precision muffler yesterday. Should I change out the muffler before it’s to late or will I be fine since I went with a lower hp tune.

Stock muffler tunes with headers offer the most in those tunes.
And same with any tune, a header accompanied by free flowing mufflers will make more, then same, without header.
But yes, it’s been said that one better wrap their aftermarket header to keep heat at bay, and safety wise when the header cracks!
Problem with a header wrap, they straight out stink, especially when running hard in warmer conditions.
Might as well ride out back of a 2 stroke, but with a more eye stinging smell!
Max Spool 16 SM tune, is a very noticeable difference from all stock. Problem is, Boost and more power is addicting, thus my excuse for TD MS17 with their SQ 2.5” muffler for next season.
Have also heard from many that all 3” aftermarket have a drone noise at some rpm, I can attest to that, as can another who has tried both the 3” and 2.5”!
So as a trail rider/racer, hoping my upgrade for next season is enjoyable all around...

If you've made the decision to go with a performance muffler, then why not go with the biggest bang for the buck....TD Superquiet 2.5.
There are mufflers out there that make more power, but they are louder. There are mufflers out there that are quieter, but they make less power. I've tried many, and you will not find a quieter muffler that makes more power than the TD SQ 2.5. Mine glows cherry red everytime I throw a leg over it, and after 9k miles, not an issue.
A few guys in my group have the TD 3 inch SQ, which flows a little more and is a little louder. It might make a few more horsepower, but I've yet to get passed by one, so imo the noise ain't worth it, but opinions vary.
Stock muffler tunes are great for trail riders. They make great horsepower, good snap/response in the trail, and corner to corner speed compared to a sled with performance muffler is on par, until you stretch them out. On long pulls, especially when the engine is heatsoaked, the stock muffler doesnt flow enough and wont lay down big mph numbers like a performance muffler. If your not a racer, or ride tight slow trails, low flow mufflers are an absolute hoot to ride.
But....what if things open up, and you find yourself staring down a long ribbon that is straight/groomed/hard/fast and appears to head into the abyss. Your Buddy pulls up alongside, gives the nod, and the two of you feed your mighty 998s the beans. The next 8-9 seconds will determine who the king is, and he who wears the crown gets to bitch slap everyone in the group over beers and supper at the cabin later tonight. Will that stock muffler do the job? Nope!!
I'll stick with my TD SQ 2.5 thank you!! Lol.

I have the 2.5 sq, but it stayed shelved this year, as I find it just a bit too loud.

Are you running stock muffler then?

Fleecer I went with precision because of the quality. Wasn’t aware of flow restrictions. Now you got me double guessing myself on my decision.

Yes, but a partially gutted stock muffler. Are you running stock muffler then?
There really isn't very much inside the stock muffler.

I have run two different perf mufflers on my tuned SW.
The first season I installed a TD Super Q hoping for quiet performance. I found the SQ relatively loud and for some odd reason seamed to vary in its exhaust tone, prob my imagination, and because I have Hurricane tunes I changed the muffler to Hurricane's trail muffler and sold the TD SQ
Dave had told me all his tunes were built and designed using their trail muffler so I felt it was the best Perf Muffler for my application.
The Hurricane trail muffler is maybe slightly quieter then the SQ but still relatively loud compared to stock.
Both mufflers performed well for my use with maybe a slight edge to Hurricane and it also comes with the stock heat shields already installed
I have been using ear plugs when riding my sleds for many years now, since I got my not so quiet Attak, so the noise level doesn't bother me on long rides.

That’s where I have been since almost new with my 2017.
Mine is Stock muffler intake, with a 3” core and exhaust outlet!
It had a drone a 4K rpm, and I had the outlet changed back to 2” for other reasons but it cured that drone without losing any power!
One of the reasons for going to the 2.5” and not the 3”is that I heard from another who had same smm, and when he upgraded his tune, he first tried the SQ 3” and said it was too loud and also had a drone, so he swapped for the SQ 2.5” and thought it was as close to stock sound when idling. It does get louder when throttled he said, but no drone!
Just the opposite of my Smm!
Oh well, hope I like it and I stay away from tickets!
Or we shall have to go backwards a bit.

I believe Justinator tried them both and said fit, finish, quietness goes to the PEFI, however performance goes to the TD SQ, albeit may be a tad louder. I guess it depends on what means more to you, performance or quietness. If you ride alone, the PEFI is the ticket, if you wanna start bitch slapping people on the lake, you may want to reconsider!! Just my opinion....
I've got a 2.5 SQ on my SRX, and at low throttle, trail riding speeds, I don't notice the sound at all. It is a little louder than stock, but I really don't notice it.....may be I'm half deaf, I don't know. At WOT it opens up and flows, hence it is definitely louder than stock. At full whack, it has a nice roar, and you can tell there are a few hundred rampaging ponies that just broke out of the gate and wanna get some!!
I have an RTX with stock muffler tunes, and although quieter, I don't really hear an exhaust note. Strangely, I just hear air rushing out of it. Although quiet, it seems to generate a lot more under hood heat, which I'm not crazy about.
I've also tried the stock mod muffler, which flows slightly better than the stock muffler, is a little louder, but quieter than the SQ 2.5. I would rate it middle of the road, as it did not perform like the SQ 2.5, but a hair better than the stock muffler. IMO and knowing what I know now....I'd do one or the other, either SM or SQ 2.5!
Years ago, I ran a Turboforce 2.5. This was much louder than the SQ 2.5 and drove me crazy, but I would put it on when running with the boys and needed every stitch of power available. One night while out on a solo trail ride, I met up with a big cat who had been handing me my a$$ all winter. I was wearing that SQ 2.5 and thought, great I'm really gonna look at tail lights now. To my surprise, the mighty winder was able to claw its way to the front, and it did so quietly!! I never put that turboforce on again!!
I stand by my opinion....bang for the buck when comparing noise and power......nothing beats an SQ 2.5!!

Yes, Turboforce, thanks for pointing that out, I edited the post. Turboflow was on my cat 1100 turbo...…..wow was that ever loud!!

Talking about exhaust notes, I have mentioned this in the past when comparing my smm to a stock Winder muffler.
My riding buddy and I, were playing on a big trail with some nice rollers for some decent air time. We were taking turns making sure the way was clear for one another on this 1/4 to 1/2 mile run. As he came by with his Max Spool 16 stock muffler tune, I remarked how surprised I was with it’s loudness, and the fact that I could tell he was turning 9K rpm, besides laughing at his air time during his high speed run. So we ran that multiple times with each sled taking turns, and what we heard was this. My Max Spool 16 with smm turns the same as his @ around 9K, but sounds as if it’s only turning 6K or so. His stock exhaust note has a higher pitch sound to it and you can hear every rpm note, making it as loud if not louder sounding then mine. My smm is louder at idle, but at wide open and going by someone standing there, the deeper sound does not allow for full rpm sound or notes! Never noticed that before!
Anyone else?

As fleecer stated, I have both the td sq and precision muffler and the award for prettiest muffler in the garage goes to precision. The welds are beautiful, the design of brackets etc. It fits exactly like stock muffler does and shields rivet right on with ease. The td muffler is rougher around the edges in appearance but im not saying the quality isnt there or that it will live a shorter life. Fleecer has run his muffler hard and its got miles and zero issues......and hes fast. In fact many of you dont know this but originally there was no such thing as a 2019 srx. One night fleecer was giving his sled “the beans” and actually traveled back in time and gave yamaha the idea of introducing a low slung 1” track model with a name like the srx because he wanted to go even faster and thats how this model was introduced.......but back to the muffler....... I ordered a 22 model for myself and the wife will likely take over my current winder. I will leave the pefi muffler on it and likely toggle over to powertrail.my new sled will get the td sq. I was going to flash my sm bundle for her but I figured if we both pulled in to an area with wardens it would be obvious if my sled had a tone and hers sounded like a vacuum cleaner so both being equipped with mufflers would be less obvious or with my luck it will result in 2 fines but ill take my chances. What I felt for seat of the pants improvement between the 2 mufflers makes me absolutely anxious like a little kid for next winter. Its gonna be a longgggg summer. With that being said I think tunes 250 and less would likely perform at or near peak potential with pefi exhaust as they just simply boost and flow less. I think the difference between the 2 becomes more apparent as you turn up the wick . What makes the td sq and attractive option as well is the price after using the sale code.
