lets hear it for the 2020 Viper

The new vipers are very similar to the 2019 cats. The Viper GT is comparable to the 2019 ZR 7000 limited which has the new controls, heated seat, qs3’s, led headlight, tunnel flares, new plastics etc. The standard 2020 viper you like if I’m not mistaken doesn’t have most of those options and is similar to the base line zr 7000. If you’re not a fan of the red GT, maybe look into a left over black/grey or black/purple/green 2019 ZR limited. I picked up a couple black/grey mid February for 10,500 and I’m very glad I did since Yamaha is a year behind on updates and I like the colors of the cats better. As long as you don’t mind the team clutches, they are basically the same thing. The only difference is the new arms and spindles on the 20’s and that still needs to be proven they work better than what they had.

I can guarantee you it's not a Chinese motor...if your basing your guess on the price of the parts have you considered that when the new version of the engine came out it was done so that the engine and its internals could be used across multiple platforms (snowmobile, sxs, waverunner, and jetboats) and doing so they drastically increased the volume of those parts being made which in turn lessened the cost of having them made?

The newer 2016 viper engine (non early build / spring dealer demo engines) which is also used in all 2016 and newer rs vector and rs venture snowmobiles shares its crankshaft with the yxz 1000 sxs and the pistons/rings are shared with the ex and vx series waverunners along with the yamaha jetboats that use that 1050cc marine engine.

Price and failed rods along with Subaru engine use etc. Ulmer says rods that failed look same as the rods in the engines to this day. The new motor is not as strong as the old. No doubt about it.

Oh mine and that 7000 would be sitting side by side and parts swapped! I admit even with possibility of inferior parts I am still really tempted. Could always swap the engine too. My Viper isnt going anywhere.

I hope you are right and we all have seen Yamaha change direction rather quickly when parts fail. So I very well could be wrong. Big part of the problem is communication. Was good to see them get rid of that Subaru engine in Grizzly so its entirely possible they fixed the rod issue. How about getting me one to test?

Yes I hear ya on the Subaru deal i had a 2016 Wolverine and the water pump took a carp and wiped out the whole motor, it was out of warranty of course but the dealer i bought it from got it covered(thanks Pats Yamaha)if I would have known it had a Subaru motor i probably would have bought a Viking instead. I was told that Yamaha owned that assembly plant that those motors where build at, but I don't know if that is true or not. I do know they switched back to the old 700 Yamaha motor in the 2019 and newer Grizzly and no longer use the 708 Subaru manufactured motor. I have since moved on to a YXZ which suits my riding style better.

Thats the real problem. Communication. Was one thing with shocks and such but when Yamaha decides to change a whole motor without telling anyone as was the case with 16.5 sleds and the Subaru thing it really tends to make people wonder since Yamaha is supposed to be a Motor company. Would think it would occur to them that maybe people are buying many of their units with that in mind at least as a big factor.

I can confirm the rods are definitely the same from 2016-2019 Vipers (non-early build 2016s) and are the same rods that were in all 2016-2018 Vector, Venture, and VK Pro IIs as well. They definitely are not as strong as the 08-15 rods in the previous engine - the thing is they only really have issues when turbo'd (similar issue with 2016-2018 YXZ side x side when turbo'd and the reason OEM Yamaha YXZ turbo kits for those came with stronger rods) - in stock trim the rods are not an issue and the reason Yamaha hasn't changed them moving forward. The biggest dissapointment was Yamaha releasing the turbo kits for the Viper without including stronger rods and then finding the limits of the stock rods - but at least in the end Yamaha stepped up and recalled those units that had their kits installed and covered the cost of installing stronger rods in them for their customers. Ideal situation definitely not but at this point in the game if you want a turbo sled the sidewinder has that covered and if not I definitely wouldn't be afraid of the engine in the 2016 and newer Viper, Vector, Venture, Or VK Pro II models.
