75-90 weight GL5 gear oil just like recommended in the manual. Same stuff Yamaha and Doo sell for their factory chaincase fills. If it smells like gear oil, it is gear oil.
I've tried ATF before in the drag sleds and seen extreme wear. Had one chain turn blue and seize it got so hot. Won't use ATF anymore.

I just filled mine with Amsoil after using 75-90 synthetic for years. I guess you don't know until you try it.

With all the normal traditional oils mentioned with varying individual results, I’ll mention this.
Yamaha outboard gear case oil. My dealer does boats and sleds only and turned me on to this stuff after the initial drain from new. Had no issues. Only fluid they use in there viper/ sidewinder sleds.
Maybe I was one of the lucky ones, who knows.
Obviously doesn’t cure the flaw of the tensioner roller but seems to keep the bearings happy with all the heavy loads the winder motor creates.

Interesting post. I do not doubt that lower unit fluid would be good choice. With all the normal traditional oils mentioned with varying individual results, I’ll mention this.

Amsoil mine was not so great IMO....
Went to KLOTZ this time on buds sled, hear good feedback on the graphite stuff.
I think its more about quantity(16oz vs 12oz) with the upper bushing wear, what is really needed is a better design!
Dan
I realize hundreds of posts have been written on this topic, but, just to confirm, is 16 oz of Klotz chain case lube still a good quantity/type of chain case lube to use? Thanks.

I think Dan was referencing that 'more is better than less'. I dump the entire Amsoil chaincase lube which is just shy of 500ml. If Klotz is your choice, then 450-500ml is best. I also squeeze 60ml of Lucas oil stabilizer as well. So there is easily 1/2 litre in the chain case. I figure its a large case, and lots of surface area to cover. The factory spec seems real light to me. Even with that volume there is no evidence of it coming out the vent.

Amsoil synthetic in my winder and my Apex before that, problem free.

I use super tech 75w90, and have for years in my sleds. No issues.

After first service I used full bottle of Amsoil chain case lube which fills chain case to top of sight glass.
Interesting thing, I had sled on a sled lift while re torquing my studs, as I was spinning track by hand I took a look at the sight glass and noticed oil at the bottom of the glass, got to imagine while riding there isn’t much oil in the bottom of the case even when using 16 oz.
