Viper Cross-Shaft shears...

Making some steel shafts and a shorter bolt. Would be nice to have some Ti around but steel will do. TD gun drilling doesnt hurt strength but does not increase it.

Experts say bolt strength is at full force at 1.5 x Dia or more so can easily get at least some solid shaft inside that bushing. Then we will find the next weakest link!

imagine the super stiff shocks don't help. a revalve will only help reduce the stress while hitting bumps.

What was the fix on the AC Snowcross sleds? Heavier/stronger Shaft?
He didn't have one. He figures its snowcross, you're gonna break stuff!!!

Do you think the 'slide action' design added to the problem? Thanks for the post. That is scary.
Btw - you must ride pretty hard.....lol

it was not my sled...it someones from the site that was being worked on and I wanted to pass on the info for others. Yes I would guess he is a hard rider.

Wow took a good look at that shaft. Its hollow all the way though. Basically looks like a tierod. Should have the XC,SX version tomorrow. Will see how that looks.

Had a local cross country racer bend one--didn't break though. That a big--or repeated big--hit.

Was the guys shocks revalved or was he running stock shocks. To stiff of shocks place the hit on the rod instead of being cushioned by the shock. Just a thought.

Unless the consumer version of the Viper is a watered down version, it's hard to believe anyone can bend anything on these suspensions. This whole chassis is supposed to be Cat's crown jewel. I've watched snowcross guys do 100' jumps; a lot more than our trail chatter or ditch banging. If this shaft was a weak point, a lot of them wouldn't be finishing their races. For that reason, I can't buy the stiff shock scenario on in this chassis either. Personally, I'd be checking this sled for a factory geometry problem, maybe compare it to another sled of it's type. If nothing else, I'd lean towards a flawed shaft, possibly a bad temper, like the jackshafts on the old Vectors.

Regarding that shaft, if nothing else, how about tapping the hole deeper and using a much longer bolt? That would get the alleged "shear point" away from the end of the bushing and strengthen this area also.

Guys this is my sled. Was keeping it quiet since is in process of being warrantied. The consumer Version Viper and cat IS a watered down version of race sled. I was on my PA,NY trip. PA trails are the roughest I have ever seen over the entire system near Erie/Waterford. Lot of snow so BIG whoops. My suspension just floats over all that and you are in total control and feel nothing. This rod was weak spot. Just that simple. Was riding with group of 9 and all except the 15 Axys were on much older sleds same trail none broke. I never was leading was always second. Did see a few minor crashes of guy in front but nothing serious and nothing broke. Lost two days of the best riding there in last decade. Hoping Yamaha fixes and makes changes. If not I am satisfied I can fix it myself better than before.

In defense of those PA trails. They only have $ to groom once a week and they are pretty darn nice when groomed. Was a ton of traffic and 3 days since last grooming. The state only funds trails on State owned land so the vast majority of trails there are not funded. The guys I rode with ride hard. They call it dancing and we were doing the Disco that night! I will definitely do exactly same thing again I know those guys are every night. So just have to prepare.
