Some fun testing - motec sidewinder

I also have a flasher and flash bundle along with a "piggyback" fuel adder setup. So I have experience with all 3. I'll keep the flasher for trails and the standalone for racing.
The flasher with piggyback fuel control is a good idea. I was getting a bit frustrated trying to tune AFR on the flash with a FPR. The adjustments helped in some areas and not so much in other areas of the flash.

I’m a trail guy that has a problem. I can’t help myself from thinking “what if”? Good luck with your sleds!
 

View attachment 139894 This is my second year with sidewinders. This one has a MoTec, the other has all the goodies with a flasher. I’m impressed with both setups. Again, I really like both sleds a lot!

I was surprised at the boost levels we can achieve on pump gas and Lucas additive using the motec with closed loop control. With recent adjustments it’s running over 20psi with clean log file (zero knock). See pic above.

The clutching is identical for both, DTAY-1, dalton B/G primary. Stock helix with Dalton B/O at 60. After turning it up a bit, the Motec sled runs max weight at 81 grams @ 9200 at 21psi (pump gas/Lucas and clean log file). 11.9 AFR. Not going to push it further this year.

I realize this setup isn’t for everyone, but for those who like to tinker.....well pretty fun. Thought it might be worth sharing. Who would have thought testing could still happen in northern WI!

I'm running 81g in Dalton DTAY-1 weights, the green spring and stock helix with B/O on the Hurricane 270 and 290 tunes. We run over 75.g in the 240 tune with stock helix. This is with Hurricanes stock hi-flow replacement muffler on them.

Can you keep the belt on this Motec sled OK? I get about 300-400 miles riding what I call easy on the 290 tune and the 8JP belt is cooked if I use the throttle too much. I get no knock even at 12.0-12.3 AFR on the 290.
I would have to bring 4 spare belts on a saddlebag trip with that set up.

At least a couple for safety Joe, but if your not riding hard, the belts will last as there is some cool fresh air there to cool the clutches while cruising. The problem comes as soon as you start rodding on it and having some fun. The issue is all the heat buildup and the "CAI" air intake robing the little bit of fresh air and robbing it to feed the engine, rather than going to cool the clutches and belt where its needed to make the belt live under increased power over stock.

Next year my sled will have a fan on the side panel blowing cool air right onto the belt and clutches to try and keep them cool.

That's why the 850 Doo has has belt issues. There is no air vents or any cooling air around the clutches. The wide body G4 has some big vents built into the hood/side panel assembly. You would think these manufacturers would design these sleds with better airflow. Maybe it's all about keeping the sleds quite and airflow suffers.

Doos have always ran hot belts, my recent 2 doos I could NEVER even touch my belts or clutches,even on lame trail riding with good air flow. But I never blew belts on the 800 or 1200.

FF to Winder....my clutches run nearly COLD all the time, even hammering around locally corner to corner, they are never HOT. The warmest they get is luke warm where I can easily still HOLD them both as long as I want.

Both my blows happened when the clutches were VERY cool. I have a ton of airflow with my setup, my CAI is not where most have theirs, so cooler clutches wont change a thing for me. Belts don't SNAP from being hot IMO. Belts when overheated on my cat and machs over the yrs either delaminate or start pulling cords. Snapped belts are from the massive power yanking the belts in two over and over until it cant take it, and snap! We need either less gear or belts made of much stronger cord.

Mike is right, these winders can be rode without blowing belts stock, or with big tunes....As long as you are not hammering them down low. The Hurricane tunes have so much balls down low, the only way to have belt life is to train your brain and right thumb. Unfortunately that is not so easy. And not fun at all. Id rather be riding a little 600 I could hold WOT corner to corner if that is the case.

Ill be changing up my gearing next fall for sure, as Im after corner to corner fun more then anything, and this sled is nothing like Ive ever owned, it would be a shame to go back to a lame amount of power, because after owning a hurricane tuned winder it will be very hard to ever ride anything below 270hp. I see speedwerx has a 42 bottom, which would MPH around 122ish, so not as low as the stock 19 gears at 118ish. Will see next fall what type of changes YAM has come up with to clutching.

I sorta feel bad for new 850 buyers....as they will just be getting slower for 19. Along with the 900t. For yrs and yrs we would add windage plates to GAIN MPH, and it worked on ice well. Seeing those massive fins on their 19 clutches sure will bode well for cooling, however it will certainly scrub off some MPH on top end. I can see the new 850 POO being king of all sleds below the almighty 998 which will never have any competition for many yrs to come IMO, and when tuned it just is impossibly fast.

Hopefully you will find the sweet spot with your clutching Dan and be done with the belt issues. It's no fun worrying about that stuff when you're out riding. It's not just the cost of the belts either. The damage that can occur other than the belt could be even worse. That's an awful lot of power you're dealing with and it could break stuff in a hurry.
 
Yes Kinger the motec is 100% plug and play and retains all the stock dash functions. you need to tie into power for the o2 sensor and into the diagnostic wiring to send the afr values through to the motec. The diagnostic port plug cap can be used to tie into by adding the needed pins to make plug and play. And you can get an sae plug end and add to the sensor to make it plug and play on that 12v source by the diagnostic plug on the sled as well.
 
Here's a few pics of the new turbo install. This will be my pump gas trail sled for the season, hopefully it will be close in performance to the old motec doo? Pleased how it came together, it's mounted in the same place as stock turbo. Just had to cut a new hole for the divorced waste gate and a bit of trimming on the heat shields. The turbo is a Xona Rotor with a HTZ wheel. The exhaust is a modified Sandale to accept a V-band clamp. Completely removed the roll over valve and vented the
crankcase pressure to a catch can. Precision Sport's designed the kit and in typical Martin style, it's first class!
