upper gear bushing

Another thought is loose chains with spec'd 1.5 turn out....

Hear me out.....The chain tensioner spring is holding chain taught, but with not alot of pressure. There is a space(maybe 3/16") between the tensioner and the adjuster bolt tip. Now you hammer this sled through all its paces, and that tensioner spring cannot hold chain back full time, so that chain tensioner is going back and forth from tension, to bolt taking up that 3/16 space over and over.

Wouldn't that constant On/OFF more and less chain pressure as chain hits bolt adjuster, and then the top gear bushing starts taking the hit.....

The crazy thing is that gear is only spinning on the shaft when in reverse! I am hesitant to experiment with different bushings or coatings since is also a good chance of destroying the shaft which also still happens now and then but was real common back in 12/13. I just replace the bushing every year. Definitely a mystery.

I totally agree that’s my thoughts to I set mine at 1 turn from new.

2017 MTX , 5700 miles , tension at 1.25 turns out , gear still looked good when I replaced chain this year , just because.
Running Hurricane 270 HE . Go Figure , my reverse motor install the same as ROCKERDAN .

Yeah it is weird....I always wondered why the need for holes, since it only spins in reverse, which is very slow and rare. I think the chain pressure pulling down on chain, while the splines to the reverse gear hold it on right side, lets the chain pull down on left side wearing bushing out....its a bad reverse design IMO.

For the cheap price, best to slap new top gear in seasonally. I know I will be next fall again.

And likely a new chain maybe too? Has anyone found the chains to stop stretching? I am near my limit with 21/41 and if it stopped stretching now, I may run another season, but not sure how many miles is safe on chain at 270++hp. Otherwise its back to new chain and having to keep adjusting initially at beginning with its fast stretching early on.

This is very interesting for me because I am gearing up to the 22 gear. I could only get the 1702-395 gear with no oil holes. The other one is back ordered until April. I drilled 2 holes in my 21 tooth gear. Do I need to drill any in this one?

They told me the same but catcountry in the states had 3 in stock I got lucky

Was there a lot of silver in your chaincase when you opened it up at the 500 mile check set at 1 turn?

I did a post on a top gear without holes. I was impressed with very little wear. I did drop a new chain in and a 22 top with the oil holes through bushing. I ran mine closer to the spec. at 1 1/4 out. This was at 6k. For miles. I notice the reverse actuator is hard to turn into place when reinstalling. Mine was especially tight after the new chain and top 22 gear. That’s a tight fit when installing new. The 22 takes up any slack and the new chain is TIGHT. All went on and I was freaking for a few hours after thinking the chain was to tight. After 700 miles now with new chain I did tighten it slightly today. Also finally found a clutch set up that’s running very well after retune and 22 top. That’s another post/story. Short story is the TP orange @ 6/1 is doing very well for my recipe.

I think you are correct here. My original 21 top gear with no holes is still mint at 9000kms. I check my chain tension often and make sure its good. Every 500-1000kms I check it.

Ok again......don’t overtighten the chain, it’s best to tighten it with the case open and leave it. Don’t re-tighten it in the middle of the season.

Curious about scott taylor gears vs cat oem too. Better? Worse?
Have a Scott Taylor gear set in a 18 tcat(21 38)with around 8000 miles and all looks new still
The inner bolt on roller was out and outer out a couple turns
Taylor gears all I use but many more options for gears
All 15 wide also

I'd really love to know why some guys are getting 6000miles on the top gear with no oiling holes drilled through where others are going 800 miles and it wobbles and takes out circlip. Any thoughts?
Good question, mine now has 4300 miles and never has had any holes in it,when we installed my semi new track at the beginning of this year,we took a look at it closely and looked perfect, and than it had 3900 miles on it.
