1. PEFI always says it's pilot's problem (bad gas, moisture/goo in intake system, boost leaks, vacuum leaks, hoses mixed up, cold-air intake, wrong exhaust, plugged up/dirty fuel system, etc, etc, etc!). Why doesn't "supposed" knock protection work on their tunes?
2. They state all their tunes are developed on 91 octane Shell gas available near their shop. I just checked - here in southern MN we have Shell but they only sell 87, 89, and 93. PEFI told me last week to be VERY careful with 93/94 as it contains high amounts of additives (to get it up to 93/94) that don't run well in turbo engines. They said they had serious deto on their own Stage 3 recently running Sunoco 94!! When they went back to Shell 91, deto went away. They said Shell 91 (IN CANADA!!!) is the purest gas they can find. They've run every gas available to them.

First pic is center cylinder. Then mag side, then PTO. Sled run on Stage 3 with 93 octane unleaded premium. No octane booster. Center compression down about 25-30 psi. Piston is toast. Cylinder bore was ok after using muriatic acid to get aluminum off. Head was ok. Other 2 cylinders show minor deto. Valves perfect, no leaks.

The entire sled was meticulously prepped prior to Stage 3 flash over 3 years ago. Rollover bypass 3+ years ago. Entire intake tract is spotless. Intercooler spotless charge tubes spotless. TS BOV. Inlet spacers shortened - no boost leaks up to 25 psi. Stock air box and filter. ARP head studs. Colder spark plugs (CR9EIX). Clutching spot on. Stock fuel system. Lots of additional cooling vents added on side panels and front. Cooling system working perfectly. Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30. No knock light. Did not overheat.

Hard to tell in those photos but was that head and cylinder actual damage or just took out head gasket?

This is not what I want to hear !!! This head gasket issue is starting to surface. I know of another member also. I WILL NOT say who. That’s for him to decide. Damn guys I hope this isn’t going to be a trend. Thanks for posting! Sorry to hear this Mr sled.

Precision tunes can not have after market intakes.. that was one bad thing and he had a modded race exhaust too.

What exhaust was he running on the sled?

Hard to tell in those photos but was that head and cylinder actual damage or just took out head gasket?
Head gasket was just fine. I have ARP head studs. Center piston had substantial damage to intake side - all deto. Some aluminum on cylinder wall above top ring. After removal is was just fine. The other 2 pistons also showed deto. No damage to cylinder walls or head. Head is flat within .0005" as is block deck.
Any detonation is a ticking time bomb. Sooner or later it will cause catastrophic damage.
I have a relative with a '17 TCat with PEFI Stage 3 too. Just checked it with my fiber optic camera. Center piston is way worse than mine! Compression is only about 125 in his center. For comparison, Service Manual says cranking compression with throttle flaps open should be 176 psi (engine at normal operating temp).

Conclusion: stage 3 PEFI will not work on southern MN 91 octane pump gas.

Modified intake or stock?

Modified intake or stock?
Intake all stock. Stock airbox, filter, hood, etc. Rollover bypass 4 years ago. Sled expertly prepped same as mine. No boost leaks, spotless intake tract, stock MAP, TS BOV, etc.

Single tune. Boost gage reads 18.3-18.5 most of the time on hard pull.
